Muller Leads FSC Past John Jay in Non-Conference Game

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's basketball team defeated John Jay, 89-73, in a non-conference home game this afternoon. FSC freshman forward Samantha Muller (North Babylon, N.Y.) was just one assist shy from a triple-double as she recorded 25 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists to lead the Rams to the victory.

Farmingdale State (4-4) opened the game with a jumper from senior guard Anna Zaborowska (East Patchogue, N.Y.) and two layups by freshman forward Layla Mendoza (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) to take a 6-0 advantage.

The Bloodhounds (4-5) responded with five points from junior forward Katie Healy (Merrick, N.Y.) to close within one.

John Jay still trailed by one, 14-13, with 3:30 left in the quarter and used a Healy layup to take their first lead of the game.

Over the final three minutes of the quarter, the Bloodhounds outscored FSC, 9-5, as they took a 24-19 advantage into the second.

After John Jay opened the second with a 3-pointer to go ahead by eight, Zaborowska knocked down a 3 and Muller recorded a pair of free-throws to cut the deficit to three.

The Rams were down by five, 31-26, and used a Muller 3-pointer and a Mendoza layup to tie the score with eight minutes on the clock.

The Bloodhounds led, 42-41, and scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 46-41 advantage into the break.

Over the first 4:56 of the third quarter, Farmingdale State outscored John Jay, 14-4, to open up a 55-50 lead.

FSC was ahead by seven, 65-58, at the start of the fourth quarter and used a 9-0 run, including five points from Muller, to take a commanding 74-58 lead.

With 3:52 to play, Muller hit a 3-pointer to give the Rams their largest lead of the game at 83-64.

Farmingdale State was outscored 9-6 in the final 3:37 but they went on for the 89-73 non-conference win.

Muller was 8-for-13 from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc, for her 25 points. In addition, she tallied two steals and two blocks. Mendoza scored a team-high 29 points on 14-for-21 shooting, while freshman forward Kalena Ricketts (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) had 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Zaborowska registered 11 points and a career-best 12 assists (4th on the all-time list).

The Rams recorded 29 assists as a team which ranks third all-time for a single game at Farmingdale State.

FSC next will head to the Western Connecticut Tournament on Thursday, December 30th and Friday, December 31st. The Rams will play SUNY Poly on Thursday at 6:00 p.m., while WestConn hosts Elms at 4:00 p.m. The consolation and championship games will be on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., respectively.
