FARMINGDALE, N.Y. |Â Sparked by a strong comeback in the top doubles flight Tuesday, the Farmingdale State College men's tennis team won its record-setting 14th consecutive match and clinched the top seed in next week's Skyline Conference Championship with a 6-3 victory over Manhattanville University.
FSC (14-0, 5-0 Skyline) were tied 1-1 with the Valiants (8-4, 4-1 Skyline) in doubles competition, with the Rams' second-flight duo of seniors
Alan Sabovic (Bohemia, N.Y.) and
Matthew Waterhouse (Massapequa Pk., N.Y.) having earned an 8-4 decision against Derwin Guzman and Carter Hunter-Crump. In top-flight play, Manhattanville's James Hourihan and Weston Goodwin jumped out to leads of 5-1 and 7-4 over Farmingdale State's
Ryan Hendel (So.; No. Merrick, N.Y.) and
Vansh Aggarwal (Jr.; Mumbai, India). However, the Rams' pairing battled back to knot the tilt at 7-all, before winning the tiebreaker, 7-5.
From there, FSC collected four points across the six singles matches to remain undefeated on the season. Senior
Matthew Olkhovetsky (Great Neck, N.Y.) was first into the scorebook with his 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 6 spot versus Hunter-Crump, before Sabovic pushed past Hourihan in the top-flight match-up, 6-3 and 6-2. After Aggarwal clinched the team match with his 6-3, 6-4 decision against Griffin Forberg in the third flight, freshman
Ty Williams (Pt. Jefferson Station, N.Y.) rounded out the Rams' scoring by carding a 6-4, 6-4 win at the fifth flight versus Guzman.
The Rams are back in action Wednesday (April 24), when they round out regular-season play at Skyline opponent St. Joseph's-Long Island in a 5 p.m. start.
