MADISON, N.J. | Led by victories in five of its singles matches Wednesday afternoon, the Farmingdale State College men's tennis team kicked off its 2023-24 schedule with a 6-3 victory at Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham.
The Rams (1-0) started off the afternoon down 2-1 to the host Knights after doubles competition, with FSC's No. 2-flight tandem of senior
Muhammad Sawar (Brentwood, N.Y.) and freshman
Ty Williams (Pt. Jefferson Station, N.Y.) earning an 8-3 victory over Kelvin Liwag and Brandon Schwartz to get the visitors on the scoresheet.
From there, Farmingdale State picked up five singles victories, including four in straight sets, to capture the win. Senior top-flight standout
Alan Sabovic (Bohemia, N.Y.) bested Matt Emery by identical 6-3 scores, with sophomore
Ryan Hendel (No. Merrick, N.Y.) topping Ronald Duval at No. 3, 6-2 and 6-2. Williams came back from down 6-4 after the first set in his No. 4-flight match with Schwartz, picking up the second set by a 7-5 count before earning a decision with a 10-3 performance in the super-tiebreaker. Senior
Matthew Olkhovetsky (Great Neck, N.Y.) and junior
Vincent Manzi (Massapequa, N.Y.) gave up just three games combined across their Nos. 5 and 6 matches to earn triumphs against Jaden Andresen and Quinn Carmody, respectively.
Head coach Adam Waterhouse's Rams are back in action next Thursday (Sept. 28), when they play host to non-conference foe Brooklyn College in a 4:30 p.m. first serve.
