Bengals and Rams Victorious on Day One of Farmingdale

Farmingdale, N.Y. – The Buffalo State and Farmingdale
State women's soccer teams both picked up wins today on day one of
the Farmingdale State Classic in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Bengals
defeated Western Connecticut, 2-1, in the opening game, before the
Rams shutout the Pilgrims 5-0 in game two.
Game 1 -
Buffalo Holds on for the Win
Buffalo held a 2-0 lead at the half after a corner kick goal in
the seventh minute and a free kick goal in the 25th
minute. Sophomore midfielder Katie Hennes (East Northport,
N.Y./Northport) took the corner took the corner attempt, assisting
on a goal by sophomore defender Jessica O'Donogue (Franklin Square,
N.Y./Frank Carey) at 6:20. The Bengals second goal was unassisted
as senior forward Barbara Kiliszek (Depew, N.Y./Lancaster) was
given a free kick just outside the center of the box and lofted a
ball over the wall into the net.
Western Connecticut spoiled the shutout attempt with a goal by
sophomore midfielder Tracy Sales (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) at
86:24. Sophomore goalkeeper Virginia Porten (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn)
was awarded the win for Buffalo State, finishing the day with seven
saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Avery (East Hampton, Conn./
East Hampton) took the loss making four saves over 74 minutes of
action.
Game 2 -
Farmingdale's Golden Nets Hat Trick
Farmingdale State freshman forward Sarah Golden
(Greenport, N.Y./Greenport) scored back-to-back goals one minute
apart at 5:29 and 6:32, giving the Rams a quick 2-0 lead. Golden
then assisted on sophomore forward Jamie Smith's
(Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem East) goal to put Farmingdale up 3-0.
In the second half, sophomore midfielder Theresa
Martorano (Commack, N.Y./Commack) sent home a cross from
sophomore forward Christina
Merrill (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) for the 4-0 advantage.
Golden completed her first career hat trick with 1:12 remaining to
play, as she dribbled through defenders for her third goal of the
day.
Sophomore goalkeeper Stacey Rao
(Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) was awarded the win with two saves,
while freshman goalkeeper Erin Palma (Saratoga Springs,
N.Y./Schuylerville) made seven saves in her 53 minutes of play for
New England College.
Buffalo State (1-1) will now face Farmingdale State (2-0) on
Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m., followed by New England College
(0-1-1) against Western Connecticut (0-1) at 2:30 p.m.
