FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State baseball team swept first-place Maritime in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at home. The Privateers entered the day with an 11-1 record in conference play, but the Rams picked up 15-1 and 11-9 victories to extend their winning streak to 11 games.
FSC (17-9, 10-4 Skyline) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning of game one when junior Ryan Wasserman (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) walked to begin the inning and scored on an RBI single from senior first baseman Dom LaFroscia (Sayville, N.Y.) to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
Tied 1-1, the Rams used a five-run second inning, highlighted by a grand slam over the right field fence by senior Richie Heyder (Holbrook, N.Y.), to go ahead 6-1.
Farmingdale State still led by five and tallied five runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to put the game out of reach at 15-1. Senior outfielder Mike Kocovic (Mahopac, N.Y.), Wasserman, LaFroscia and freshman Matt Faraone (East Yaphank, N.Y.) each had RBI's in the final two innings.
Heyder finished with two hits, two walks, two runs scored and four RBI's, while LaFroscia recorded two hits and four runs batted in. Wasserman went 2-for-2 with four runs scored, two RBI and two walks and Kocovic added three hits and three runs scored. Maldonado and junior infielder Christian Villacci (Nesconset, N.Y.) each tallied two hits in the win.
Senior pitcher TJ Cox (Mineola, N.Y. - W, 4-0, 4.1 IP, 0 ER) started and earned the win for Farmingdale State, allowing just one run in 4.1Â innings of work. Classmate Derek Watts (Baldwin, N.Y.) tossed 2.2 innings in relief to close out the game.
In game two, FSC trailed 6-3 heading into the fifth inning and scored four times to jump in front. Heyder produced a two-out RBI single before LaFroscia reached on a run-scoring error. Villacci followed with an RBI single before the Rams scored their seventh run on a wild pitch.
They extended their lead in the sixth as freshman designated hitter John Francisco (Smithtown, N.Y.) tallied a sacrifice fly before LaFroscia hit a three-run home run to right-center field to put FSC in front, 11-6.
The Privateers (16-13, 11-3 Skyline) scored three runs in the top of the ninth to close the gap to two, but junior Thomas O'Neill (Farmingdale, N.Y. - Sv, 1) recorded the final two outs to secure the 11-9 victory and earn the save.
Heyder went 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored and one RBI in game two. Sophomore outfielder Mike D'Angelo (Mineola, N.Y.) recorded three hits and scored a run, while Kocovic finished with two hits and two RBI. Francisco added two hits and one RBI and LaFroscia finished with the home run, three RBI's and two runs scored.
Senior pitcher Christian Pellegrino (Carle Place, N.Y.) started on the mound for Farmingdale State, going 4.1 innings before Watts (W, 3-4) tossed 3.2 innings in relief.
Farmingdale State will next take on St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn for a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 26th at 11:00 a.m. The games will be played at Farmingdale State with the Rams batting as the away team.
