Baseball Falls to Mount Saint Vincent in Skyline Conference Doubleheader

Game 1: Mount Saint Vincent - 14, Farmingdale State - 5
Game 2: Mount Saint Vincent - 12, Farmingdale State - 11
PURCHASE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State baseball team opened Skyline Conference play on Sunday with a doubleheader against Mount Saint Vincent and fell in both contests. The Dolphins took game one by a score of 14-5 before edging the Rams, 12-11, in game two.

FSC (6-7, 0-2 Skyline) jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning of game one when freshman John Francisco (Smithtown, N.Y.) singled and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Rams a 1-0 advantage.

Mount Saint Vincent (6-11, 4-2 Skyline) tied the game in the bottom half and took a 5-1 lead with four more runs in the second.

Farmingdale State responded with a three-run third inning to quickly cut the deficit to one. Senior right fielder Richie Heyder (Holbrook, N.Y.) delivered a two-run home run, while senior third baseman Jimmy Manzella (Baldwin, N.Y.) added an RBI single.

The Rams added another run in the fourth when freshman outfielder Matt Faraone (East Yaphank, N.Y.) singled and scored on a wild pitch to even the game at 5-5.

The Dolphins regained the lead on an RBI single in the bottom half of the fourth and went on for the 14-5 win after an eight-run sixth inning.

Heyder led FSC, going 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBI's, two walks and a run scored. Francisco scored twice and added a stolen base, while senior first baseman Dom LaFroscia (Sayville, N.Y.) finished 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Faraone recorded a hit and scored a run and Ryan Plocker (Dix Hills, N.Y.) added a hit for the Rams.

In game two, the Rams took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning before scoring four times in the second to go up 5-0. Faraone tripled to start the second inning and quickly scored on an RBI single by junior second baseman Aiden Mehmel (Mastic Beach, N.Y.). The Rams then tallied three unearned runs as they went ahead by five.

Mount Saint Vincent trailed 5-2 and produced a six-run fifth inning to take the lead, 8-5.

FSC responded with four runs in the sixth to regain the advantage at 9-8, but a pair of runs by UMSV in the seventh gave them a 10-9 edge.

In the eighth inning, Farmingdale State recaptured the lead after tallying runs on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Tyler Diez (Levittown, N.Y.) and a wild pitch that brought home Mehmel.

Mount Saint Vincent registered a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 12-11 and they did not allow a hit in the ninth as they went on for the victory.

Faraone paced the Rams offensively, going 3-for-5 with a triple, double, two RBI's and three runs scored. Mehmel finished 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI, a stolen base and a hit-by-pitch. Heyder added two hits and two walks, while LaFroscia recorded two hits and a walk. Diez drove in two runs for Farmingdale State.

The Rams are right back at it on Monday (March 30) with a home Skyline Conference doubleheader versus Manhattanville starting at 3:00 p.m.
