Baseball Sweeps CCNY in Non-Conference DH

Game 1: Farmingdale State - 12, CCNY - 1
Game 2: Farmingdale State - 4, CCNY - 3
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College baseball team hosted non-conference opponent CCNY for a 7-inning doubleheader on Sunday afternoon and earned a pair of wins. FSC took the first game 12-1, before tallying a 4-3 walk-off victory in game two. The Rams improved to 5-5 overall, while the Beavers dropped to 1-11.

FSC quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Freshman designated hitter John Francisco (Smithtown, N.Y.) and senior right fielder Richie Heyder (Holbrook, N.Y.) tallied back-to-back singles before senior first baseman Dom LaFroscia (Sayville, N.Y.) hit a two-run double. Later in the inning, sophomore shortstop Kaolis Delacruz (Levittown, N.Y.) hit a home run down the left field line to give FSC the 4-0 advantage.

Farmingdale State extended the lead with three runs in the second and three more in the fourth to take a commanding 10-1 advantage. In the second, LaFroscia recorded another two-run double and sophomore left fielder Mike D'Angelo (Mineola, N.Y.) added an RBI single to go up by seven. Senior catcher Ryan Plocker (Dix Hills, N.Y.) tallied a two-run double and sophomore third baseman Tyler Diez (Levittown, N.Y.) chipped in with an RBI single in the fourth to give FSC the 10-1 lead.

The Rams added two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Diez and a single by Francisco as they went on for the 12-1 victory.

Senior pitchers Derek Watts (Baldwin, N.Y. - 3.0 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) and TJ Cox (Mineola, N.Y. - W, 1-0, 4.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 3 SO) combined to hold CCNY to just two hits in the win.

Francisco produced three hits, two runs and an RBI, while LaFroscia recorded a pair of doubles and four runs batted in. Delacruz was 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBI's, two runs scored and a walk. Plocker registered two hits and two runs batted in and Heyder chipped in with a hit, two walks and two runs scored.

The Rams trailed 2-0 through three innings of game two before scoring three runs in the fourth to take the lead. Heyder, LaFroscia, Delacruz and Plocker each registered doubles in the inning as FSC took a 3-2 edge.

After the Beavers knotted the game with a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning, FSC put a runner on in the bottom of the inning but were unable to score as the game went to the seventh tied at 3-3.

CCNY led off the seventh with a walk and stolen base, but Plocker picked off the runner at second base during the next at-bat to end the threat.

In the bottom half, junior second baseman Aiden Mehmel (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) led off with a single and Diez followed with a sacrifice bunt. Francisco batted next and singled through the right side to bring home Mehmel and secure the 4-3 walk-off victory.

Mehmel led FSC with three hits and the game-winning run, while Delacruz had two hits, a double, two RBI's and one run scored. Heyder added two hits, a double and a run scored and both Francisco and Plocker tallied a hit and an RBI each.

Freshman pitcher Robert Malvino (Glen Cove, N.Y. - W, 1-0, 1.0 IP, 2 SO) earned the win on the mound after throwing a shutout inning with two strike outs. Senior pitcher Christian Pellegrino (Carle Place, N.Y. - 3.0 IP, 1 H, 3 SO) threw three innings in relief allowing just one hit and striking out three.

The Rams will next play host to John Jay in a single 9-inning game on Thursday, March 23rd at 3:00 p.m.
