FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College baseball team pushed its winning streak to five straight games Thursday afternoon, as the Rams' offense exploded for 26 hits in a 26-5 non-conference victory over visiting John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
For FSC (6-5), the 26 hits are tied for the fifth most in a game in program history, while its 26 runs are tied for eighth. In all, 16 players reached base safely on the day against the Bloodhounds.
John Jay (1-15) plated one run in the top of the first inning, before the hosts took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame by scoring single runs on a sacrifice fly by senior
Dom LaFroscia (Sayville, N.Y.), and a RBI single to center field by sophomore
Mike D'Angelo (Mineola, N.Y.).
The Rams added three more runs in the second inning to push their edge to 5-1, with freshman
John Francisco (Smithtown, N.Y.) scoring sophomore
Tyler Diez (Smithtown, N.Y.) on a single through the left side of the infield, and LaFroscia lacing a two-run double down the left-field line to plate senior
Richie Heyder (Holbrook, N.Y.) and junior
Aiden Mehmel (Mastic Beach, N.Y.).Â
Farmingdale State sent 16 batters to the plate in an 11-run third inning, which was highlighted by a three-run home run to left field by senior catcher
Ryan Plocker (Dix Hills, N.Y.), while Diez scored twice and reached on a two-run triple during the stretch. The Rams tacked on six runs in the fourth inning, one run in the fifth inning, and three runs in the seventh inning to round out their offensive onslaught.
Mehmel finished 4-for-5 with four runs, two RBI and two stolen bases, with
Christopher Sais (Sr.; Hicksville, N.Y.),
Vincent Deiosso (Jr.; Glen Cove, N.Y.) and
Matt Faraone (Fr.; East Yaphank, N.Y.) all registering three hits apiece on the day. Sais and LaFroscia both drove in four runs, while Diez and Faraone joined Mehmel with four-run showings.
Eight Farmingdale State players pitched in the contest, including junior
Carmine Scardina (Farmingdale, N.Y.), who tossed two innings of one-run, three-hit ball to go with two strikeouts to earn his first victory in a FSC uniform.
The Rams will now open Skyline Conference play on Sunday at noon, when it takes on the University of Mount Saint Vincent in a doubleheader at Manhattanville University in Purchase, N.Y. Farmingdale State's home doubleheader versus Manhattanville (receiving votes in this week's D3baseball.com Top 25 poll), originally scheduled for Saturday, will now take place on Monday afternoon at 3.
