Fourth Quarter Surge Sends Women's Basketball Past Mount Saint Vincent

Farmingdale State 59, Mount Saint Vincent 47
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | Sophomore Emily Tsiforas (Manhasset Hills, N.Y.) scored nine of her game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon, leading the Farmingdale State College women's basketball team to a 59-47, Skyline Conference win over the University of Mount Saint Vincent.

FSC (8-8, 6-5 Skyline) outscored the visiting Dolphins (2-12, 1-9) by an 18-7 margin in the final quarter, with Tsiforas (7 rebounds, 2 steals, 6-of-8 FT) scoring five straight points to put the Rams ahead 46-41 with 7:06 remaining. After UMSV notched three consecutive layups to go ahead 47-46 with 5:16 on the clock, Farmingdale State kept the road team off the scoreboard the rest of the way. The hosts went ahead for good at the 3:22 mark on a layup by freshman forward Alana Henry (Amityville, N.Y.), and used baskets by junior Mia Simmons (Queens, N.Y.), Tsiforas and senior point guard Shyann Parker (Floral Park, N.Y.) to go up 54-47 with 40 seconds left. FSC then iced the game with a 5-for-6 effort at the free-throw line inside the final 20 seconds of action.

Mount Saint Vincent led 14-13 after one quarter, and scored six of the first seven points of the second frame to increase their edge to 20-14 at the 7:18 mark. The Rams slowly chipped away at the deficit, and scored the last five points of the half to carry a 29-26 lead into the locker room. Sophomore Nia Phillips (Glen Cove, N.Y.) started the spurt with one free throw with 1:25 left, before Parker and junior Samyah Allen (Queens Village, N.Y.) hit layups with 45 and 13 seconds remaining, respectively.

Parker scored 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting to go with four rebounds and three steals, while sophomore Brianna Amenta (Oceanside, N.Y.) chipped in with six points and a pair of steals. Henry added five points off the bench, with Phillips, Simmons and senior post Alexandria Walbroehl (Mastic Beach, N.Y.; team-high eight rebounds) contributing four points apiece.

Farmingdale State rounds out its three-game homestand Wednesday night (Jan. 21), when it plays host to Skyline foe St. Joseph's-Brooklyn with tip-off scheduled for 6.
