Late Push Lifts Women's Basketball Past St. Joseph's-Brooklyn

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State women's basketball team hosted St. Joseph's-Brooklyn for a Skyline Conference game on Wednesday evening and earned a 62-57 victory. A late fourth-quarter run allowed FSC to pull away as they improved to 9-8 overall and 7-5 in conference action.

The opening quarter saw both teams trade baskets before the Rams carried a 15-13 lead into the second quarter.

Leading 26-23 in the second, Farmingdale State extended their advantage to seven on four unanswered points by junior guard Mia Simmons (Queens, N.Y.). The Bears (8-9, 4-8 Skyline) responded with a 10-3 run to close the quarter as the game was knotted at 33-33 at halftime.

St. Joseph's-Brooklyn outscored Farmingdale State, 13-10, in the third quarter as they took a 46-43 lead into the final quarter.

After the Bears opened the fourth with a basket, a 7-0 run by the Rams put them ahead 50-48. Junior forward Samyah Allen (Queens Village, N.Y.) produced four points in the spurt.

St. Joe's cut their deficit to one, 51-50, with three minutes remaining before another Allen layup gave FSC a three-point edge. Following a Bears free-throw, Simmons tallied back-to-back layups to make it 57-51 with under two minutes remaining. Senior guard Shyann Parker (Floral Park, N.Y.) added a fast-break layup in the final minute and the Rams sealed the win at the foul line as they went on for the 62-57 Skyline victory.

Simmons led Farmingdale State with 14 points, to go with six rebounds, while sophomore guard Brianna Amenta (Oceanside, N.Y.) produced 12 points and a career-high eight rebounds and five assists. Sophomore guard Emily Tsiforas (Manhasset Hills, N.Y.) recorded 11 points, including 7-for-8 at the free-throw line, and a career-best seven steals. Allen finished with 12 points off the bench and Parker chipped in with six points, 11 rebounds and four assists.

Farmingdale State will return to action on Saturday, January 24th, when it travels to Manhattanville for a Skyline Conference matchup scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
