Newburgh, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team split a conference doubleheader against first place Mount Saint Mary College this afternoon in Newburgh, N.Y. The Rams now stand at 18-12 overall, 10-4 in Skyline play, while the Knights improved to 17-9, 12-2.
Leading 1-0 in the top of third, a Michelle Mongiello (Elmont, N.Y.) RBI single down the left field line increased Farmingdale State's advantage to two. In the Rams next at-bat, senior right fielder Marissa Monaco (Bohemia, N.Y.) recorded an RBI single to right which scored Andrea Klarman to put the Rams on top 3-0.
Two batters later, junior designated player Meghan Acton (Levittown, N.Y.) plated two runs with a double to left center.
Mount Saint Mary scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth which cut the deficit to 5-3 before the Rams put the game out of reach with a 3-run homerun by Monaco in the seventh inning.
The Knights were held scoreless in the bottom half of the seventh en route to the 8-3 game one FSC victory.
Klarman was 3-for-4 at the plate, including a solo homerun in the first inning, while Mongiello had three hits, scored two runs and an RBI. Monaco was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a game-high four runs batted in for Farmingdale State. Senior pitcher Taylor Webb (West Babylon, N.Y.) improved to 6-3 on the season after allowing two earned runs on six hits.
Junior catcher Meagan Anderson (Patchogue, N.Y.) led off game two with a bunt single and advanced to second as Klarman singled through the left side. After a Monaco walk, a sac fly by sophomore first baseman Lori Michalowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) gave the Rams an early 1-0 lead.
Mount Saint Mary responded with four runs in the bottom of the first capped off with a three-run homer by sophomore first baseman Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.).The Knights led 5-2 after four and scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth for a run-rule 10-2 win.
Surdan finished the game 3-for-3 with two doubles, a homerun and four RBI.
With the win, the Knights clinched the #1 seed and will host the upcoming Skyline Playoffs on Friday - Sunday, April 24-26. The Rams have clinched the #2 spot for the double-elimination tournament and will face #3 Mount Saint Vincent on Friday.
