FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College baseball team moved its winning streak to nine straight games on Thursday afternoon, as the Rams swept a Skyline Conference doubleheader from visiting Yeshiva University. FSC earned a 20-6 victory to open the afternoon, before capturing a 20-2 decision in seven innings in the nightcap.
After spotting the Maccabees (2-22, 1-13 Skyline) a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning in game one, Farmingdale State (15-9, 8-4) answered with five runs in its half of the frame. Senior
Dom LaFroscia (Sayville, N.Y.) provided a run-scoring single, before senior
Aiden Mehmel (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and junior
Ryan Tam (Wantagh, N.Y.) each smacked two-run singles to center field to give the hosts a 5-3 advantage.
YU responded with a two-run top of the second inning to knot the score at 5-all, before senior outfielder
Richie Heyder's (Holbrook, N.Y.) two-run home run to right field started a four-run bottom of the second for the Rams, and gave his team the lead for good. FSC added three runs in the fourth inning, along with an eight-run sixth that was highlighted by a grand slam down the left-field line by junior
Vincent Deiosso (Glen Cove, N.Y.), to cap off an opening contest that saw Farmingdale State collect 16 hits and nine walks versus Maccabees pitching.
Heyder and junior
Carmine Scardina (Farmingdale, N.Y.) both drove in three runs to start the afternoon, while five Rams collected two hits apiece. Freshman
Jacob Kouba (Plainview, N.Y.) pitched 4.2 innings of relief to earn his second victory of the campaign.
Yeshiva scored one run in the top of the first inning of the second tilt to once again nudge ahead in its first at-bat. FSC countered with a three-run bottom of the first that was highlighted by a two-run single from freshman
Joseph Lanza (East Meadow, N.Y.), before putting the game out of reach with a 15-run second inning.
Lanza finished the nightcap 4-for-5 at the plate and a homer short of the cycle to go with six RBI, while Scardina added a 3-for-4 effort with three runs scored. Junior
Christian Villacci (Smithtown, N.Y.) and sophomore
Mike D'Angelo (Mineola, N.Y.) drove in three runs apiece to pace a 19-hit contest for the home side, which received three innings of one-run, one-hit ball from winning pitcher
Joe Mattaliano (So.; Staten Island, N.Y.) to help finish off the sweep.
