Baseball Picks Up Pair of Skyline Victories at Mount Saint Mary

Game 1: Farmingdale State 6, Mount Saint Mary 4
Game 2: Farmingdale State 11, Mount Saint Mary 4
NEWBURGH, N.Y. | Propelled by a come-from-behind win in Saturday's opening game, the Farmingdale State College baseball team captured a Skyline Conference doubleheader sweep on the road at Mount Saint Mary College. The Rams used a five-run seventh inning to collect a 6-4 decision in the opener, before dropping the Knights by an 11-4 count in game two.

FSC (9-9, 2-4 Skyline) found itself down 2-0 after one inning of play in the first contest to Mount Saint Mary (7-18, 2-8), before getting back one run in the top of the third inning when senior Dom LaFroscia's (Sayville, N.Y.) infield single scored sophomore Kaolis Delacruz (Levittown, N.Y.).

After the Knights upped their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Farmingdale State posted a five-run top of the seventh inning. Junior Ryan Wasserman (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) was issued a bases-loaded walk to plate Matt Faraone (Fr.; East Yaphank, N.Y.), before senior Preseason All-American Richie Heyder (Holbrook, N.Y.) laced a bases-clearing double down the right-field line to score senior Aiden Mehmel (Mastic Beach, N.Y.), Delacruz and to give the visitors a 5-3 edge. Two batters later, Heyder pushed his team ahead 6-3 when he stole home plate.

Mount Saint Mary scratched back one run in the bottom of the seventh, before LaFroscia snared a line drive at first base and doubled off a Knights runner at second to end the contest.

LaFroscia finished the first game 2-for-3 at the plate, while Delacruz (1-for-1, 2 BB) reached base safely three times and scored a pair of runs. Faraone picked up the win on the pitcher's mound with one inning of scoreless relief, before senior TJ Cox (Mineola, N.Y.) pitched around an unearned run in the seventh inning to earn his first save of the year.

In the second game, the Rams scored five runs in the fourth inning, and four more in the sixth, to back senior starting pitcher Derek Watts (Baldwin, N.Y.). Freshman John Francisco (Smithtown, N.Y.), Heyder (2-for-4, 2 BB), LaFroscia (2-for-5, 2 RBI, SB) and Delacruz (1-for-4, 3B, 4 RBI) all notched one RBI in the fourth frame, before MSMC pulled to within a 5-3 count with a two-run bottom half of the inning.

From there, Delacruz's two-run triple to left-center field in the top of the sixth inning scored Wasserman and LaFroscia, before he came home on Faraone's sacrifice fly. Sophomore catcher Sean Maldonado (Glen Head, N.Y.) staked the visitors to a 9-3 advantage, when he scored the Rams' fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Francisco (2-for-6, 2 R) scored on a RBI single in the eighth by LaFroscia, while Heyder crossed the dish one inning later on a sacrifice fly by Delacruz.

Faraone and senior Mike Kocovic (Mahopac, N.Y.) both went 3-for-4 in the nightcap, while Watts scattered four hits and two earned runs while fanning four Mount Saint Mary hitters to earn the victory on the hill. Cox picked up his second save of the afternoon by tossing the final four innings in relief.

Farmingdale State returns home next Saturday, April 18, for a noon doubleheader versus St. Joseph's-Long Island.
