Baseball Wraps Up Florida Swing with Pair of Victories

DAVENPORT, Fla. | The Farmingdale State College baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip to Florida in grand fashion, as the Rams (3-5) earned a 5-3 victory Tuesday versus Springfield College, before capturing a 13-0, seven-inning triumph one day later against Lesley University.

Against Springfield, FSC faced one-run deficits twice in the first three innings, before registering a two-run top of the fourth inning to take the lead for good at 3-2. The Rams went ahead with two outs in the frame, as freshman outfielder John Francisco (Smithtown, N.Y.) drove a first-pitch single to right-center field to score senior Jimmy Manzella (Baldwin, N.Y.) and sophomore shortstop Kaolis Delacruz (Levittown, N.Y.).

Delacruz doubled Farmingdale State's edge after leading off the top of the sixth inning with a triple to center field, before coming home on a throwing error three batters later on a throwing error in the infield by the Pride.

After Springfield cut its deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Rams senior preseason All-American outfielder Richie Heyder (Holbrook, N.Y.) added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. He reached on a one-out, ground-rule double to left-center field, before crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly by senior Dom Lafroscia (Sayville, N.Y.). Freshman pitcher Robert Malvino (Glen Cove, N.Y.) then struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to finish off his two-inning outing and capture his first collegiate save.

Delacruz (2 R), Heyder and sophomore Mike D'Angelo (Mineola, N.Y.) each tallied two hits in the contest, while junior right-hander Thomas O'Neill (Farmingdale, N.Y.) earned the win on the mound by tossing five innings of four-hit, seven-strikeout ball.

One day later against the Lasers, senior pitcher Christian Pellegrino (Carle Place, N.Y.) allowed just one hit with nine strikeouts in his five innings of work, as the Rams offense collected 16 hits on the afternoon. Heyder (2-for-2, 2 BB, 2 RBI, 3 R) and D'Angelo (4-for-4, 4 RBI) each had RBI base hits in the two-run first inning, before the pair combined for four more RBI one inning later. D'Angelo's single to left field in the second inning cleared the bases, as Heyder, Francisco and junior Christian Villacci (Nesconset, N.Y.) all crossed the plate on the play.

Manzella (3-for-4, 3 RBI) laced a two-run single up the middle to cap a three-run sixth inning for the Rams, before four different players notched a RBI in the four-run seventh.

Villacci finished the afternoon with a 2-for-4 performance at the dish, while two-thirds of an inning apiece by junior Ben Ellenport (Massapequa, N.Y.), classmate Carmine Scardina (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and freshman Jacob Kouba (Plainview, N.Y.) capped off a combined three-hitter by FSC pitching.

Farmingdale State next returns home for a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday (March 22) at noon, when it will play host to a pair of seven-inning games against the City College of New York.
