Mia Simmons (Queens, N.Y.) scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Farmingdale State women's basketball team to a 78-68 come-from-behind win over visiting Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday in Nold Hall. The Rams improved to 10-10 overall and 8-7 in conference play with the win, while the Knights fell to 12-7, 11-3.
FSC opened the game on an 8-2 run but Mount Saint Mary responded and led 14-11 after the first quarter.
The Knights outscored Farmingdale State 26-22 in the second quarter as they held a 40-33 lead at halftime.
The Rams trailed by 11, 55-44, with 2:30 to play in the third and closed with eight consecutive points, including a pair of Simmons baskets, to cut the deficit to 55-52 entering the fourth.
Farmingdale State was down 57-56 with six minutes remaining and used a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Emily Tsiforas (Manhasset Hills, N.Y.) to jump ahead 59-57.
After Mount Saint Mary tied the game with a jumper, four straight points from senior forward Alexandria Walbroehl (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and a 3-pointer by Simmons put the Rams in front, 66-59, with 2:45 to play.
The Knights closed to within four with 46 seconds remaining but FSC went 8-for-8 at the free-throw line down the stretch as they secured the Skyline Conference victory, 78-68. Farmingdale State made 16-of-16 free throws in the fourth quarter to earn the win.
Simmons hit a trio of 3-pointers and made 9-of-10 free-throws en route to her 28 points. Walbroehl tied her career-high with 23 points, to go with seven rebounds. She was a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line to tie the single-game record for percentage. Sophomore guard Brianna Amenta (Oceanside, N.Y.) scored 10 points off the bench in the victory.
As a team, Farmingdale State shot 88.9 percent (24-for-27) from the free throw line and tied for the seventh best percentage for a single-game in program history.
The women's basketball team will next travel to Sarah Lawrence for a Skyline Conference game on Wednesday, February 4th at 7:00 p.m.
