Women's Basketball Kicks Off Skyline Play with Road Win Over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn

Farmingdale State 77, St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 69
BROOKLYN, N.Y. | Backed by a strong second quarter and a career-high 17 points off the bench by sophomore Brianna Amenta (Oceanside, N.Y.), the Farmingdale State College women's basketball team opened Skyline Conference play with a 77-69 win Wednesday night at previously unbeaten St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn.

After trailing 10-4 just four minutes into the game, FSC (2-1, 1-0 Skyline) responded with nine points from junior Mia Simmons (Queens, N.Y.) to hold an 18-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Rams carried that momentum into the second period, when it outscored the Bears (4-1, 0-1) by a 27-14 margin on their way to a 45-30 edge at halftime. Amenta scored three 3-point field goals during the quarter, including a triple off an assist from sophomore Nia Phillips (Glen Cove, N.Y.) with 1:10 on the clock.

Farmingdale State's largest lead of the night came with 8:27 remaining in the fourth quarter following back-to-back buckets to start the frame by senior post Alexandria Walbroehl (Mastic Beach, N.Y.), as the visitors held on for the conference-opening victory.

Simmons (six rebounds, game-high four steals) tied Amenta for the team-high with 17 points, while junior Samyah Allen (Queens Village, N.Y.) checked in with 11 points, eight boards and two blocked shots. Walbroehl's nine rebounds led FSC, with senior Shyann Parker (Floral Park, N.Y.) and freshman Allison Ntambwe (Queens Village, N.Y.) adding seven points apiece to the victorious effort. The Rams were true on 17-of-21 (.810) free-throw attempts to help secure the win.

Farmingdale State will next play host to Skyline foe Manhattanville University on Saturday (Nov. 22) at noon.
