Gemma Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore
Mia Simmons (Queens, N.Y.) combined for 37 points on 16-of-19 shooting Tuesday night, guiding the Farmingdale State College women's basketball team to a 77-49, Skyline Conference victory over visiting Purchase College.
Pohalski scored 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor, while Simmons netted a career-high 18 on an 8-of-9 shooting display that included a 2-of-3 showing from 3-point range. Both backcourt players notched three steals apiece for the Rams (11-8, 8-6 Skyline).
FSC led from start to finish against the Panthers (3-15, 2-11), with seniors
Alexandria Walbroehl (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and
Erin Conte (Melville, N.Y.) scoring back-to-back buckets inside the first 54 seconds of play. The hosts led 23-9 after the first period, ending with seven-straight points as baskets by Simmons sandwiched a 3-point field goal by sophomore forward
Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.).Â
The second quarter started with another 7-0 run inside of the first three minutes, as Simmons scoring a layup eight seconds in and followed up a jumper by Pohalski with a long-range trey. Farmingdale State finished the first half with a 40-21 lead, and put the contest out of reach with a 28-10 edge in the third quarter.
Wooden connected on three 3-pointers on her way to a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while adding four steals and two blocked shots on the defensive end of the floor. Walbroehl ended her evening with eight points in just 14 minutes of action, with senior guard
Isabella Greenwald (West Islip, N.Y.) handing out five assists. Conte registered four assists and four steals for the Rams, who converted 30 Purchase turnovers into 31 points on the night. All 14 FSC student-athletes saw game action and recorded at least five minutes apiece, with 10 players finding their way onto the scoresheet.
Farmingdale State continues Skyline play on Saturday (Feb. 1), when it travels to Riverdale, N.Y., for a noon tip-off at defending champion University of Mount Saint Vincent.
