U.S. Merchant Marine Academy - 64, Farmingdale State - 56
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The FSC women's basketball team hosted the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday evening and fell by a score of 64-56. Farmingdale State closed within five points in the final minute, but were unable to mount the comeback. The Rams dropped to 7-5 in Skyline Conference play, while USMMA remains perfect at 12-0.
The Rams (10-7) were down 6-2 just under five minutes into the game before a 7-0 run put them in front by three. Sophomore guard
Mia Simmons (Queens, N.Y.) knocked down a 3-pointer and recorded a driving layup and senior guard
Isabella Greenwald (West Islip, N.Y.) made a jumper in the run.
USMMA (15-1) had a 13-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter and held FSC to just a pair of field goals in the second as they took a 29-17 lead into the halftime break.
Over the first 6:55 of the third quarter, the Mariners extended their lead to 20 points at 42-22.
FSC cut their deficit to 16, 48-32, before the end of the fourth and got it to 12, 50-38, just two minutes into the fourth.
Farmingdale State was down, 56-43, with 4:03 remaining and used an
Erin Conte (Melville, N.Y.) layup and a 3-pointer by sophomore forward
Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.) to close to within eight points, 56-48.
After trading baskets over the next two minutes, a Conte steal and layup with 45 seconds to play made it a five-point game at 61-56.
The Rams were unable to register another point down the stretch as they fell, 64-56.
Senior forward
Alexandria Walbroehl (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) led FSC with nine points and seven rebounds, while Conte had nine points, three rebounds and three steals. Senior guard
Gemma Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) tallied seven points and five steals, Wooden finished with seven points and seven rebounds, and Greenwald produced seven points and three assists. Simmons and freshman
Brianna Amenta (Oceanside, N.Y.) added seven points off the bench and junior
Shyann Parker (Floral Park, N.Y.) filled the stat sheet with three points, five rebounds,, four assists, five steals and one blocked shot.
The Rams will next travel to Mount Saint Mary College for a Skyline Conference game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
