DANBURY, Conn. | The Farmingdale State women's soccer team secured their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over the University of Saint Joseph in their second game at Western Connecticut this weekend.
The Rams (1-1) used a pair of early goals to jump out to a 2-0 advantage. Only 1:11 into play, sophomore forward
Kayla Mendez (Staten Island, N.Y.) raced past two defenders up the right side of the field and centered the ball for freshman forward
Abigail Chest (Johnstown, N.Y.), who buried her first collegiate goal to give FSC the early lead.
Just over 13 minutes later, sophomore defender
Stephanie Alberghine (Medford, N.Y.) set up freshman midfielder
Rachel McAuliff (Sayville, N.Y.) with her second goal of the season, extending Farmingdale State's lead to 2-0.
The Blue Jays (0-2) got on the board in the 28th minute after a pass split the Rams defense and led to a goal by Julia Loughman.
In the opening minute of the second half, Mendez nearly doubled the FSC lead after forcing a turnover at the top of the box, but her shot was turned away on a diving stop as the game remained 2-1.
The Rams had the next four shots on goal over the next 35 minutes but were unable to extend their lead.
FSC controlled play in the final 10 minutes, outshooting the Blue Jays, 4-0, as they went on for the 2-1 victory.
Freshman goalkeeper
Sam Richards (Elliott City, MD) made four saves for the Rams in the win. St. Joseph goalie Madison Corcoran stopped 10 FSC shots.
The Farmingdale State women's soccer team will next head to Misericordia University to take on John Carroll and Shenandoah in a pair of neutral site matches on Saturday and Sunday, September 7-8.
