FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College women's soccer team opened the 2026 season with a 2-0 loss to Plattsburgh State on Saturday afternoon as part of the FSC Women's Soccer Invitational. The Cardinals improved to 2-0 on the year, while the Rams fell to 0-1.
FSC controlled play early, registering three shots in the opening five minutes. Senior forward Kayla Mendez (Staten Island, N.Y.) and sophomore forward Katelyn Nunziato (North Babylon, N.Y.) each had shots saved by Plattsburgh goalkeeper Desiree DuBois, while sophomore midfielder Jenna Biondo (North Babylon, N.Y.) sent a shot just wide to the left.
Just 7:02 into the match, senior goalkeeper Riana Herold (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) made a leaping save that deflected off her hand and onto the crossbar to keep the game scoreless. Herold made two more stops shortly after, but the Cardinals broke through in the 15th minute when Bailee Lafountain headed in her second touch off a flick from Sydney Myers to give Plattsburgh a 1-0 advantage.
The Cardinals held the one-goal lead heading into halftime as Herold finished the opening 45 minutes with five saves.
Plattsburgh doubled its lead in the 57th minute when Sydney Myers received a through ball from Mariah Nowicki and scored from 15 yards out into the lower left corner of the net.
The Rams continued to pressure the Cardinals and nearly cut into the deficit in the 81st minute when Mendez ripped a shot that hit the crossbar. Farmingdale State was unable to find the back of the net as Plattsburgh held on for the 2-0 victory.
FSC finished with 17 shots, including six on goal, while Plattsburgh registered 14 shots with eight on target. Herold recorded five saves in net, while DuBois had six stops to earn the shutout.
The women's soccer team will return to action tomorrow, Sunday, September 6th, when they face Westfield State at 3:00 p.m. Stevens Institute, who tied Westfield 1-1 on Saturday, will take on Plattsburgh at 11:00 a.m.
