Biondo's Last-Minute Penalty Sends Women's Soccer Past Westfield State, Gives Roche 250th Career Victory

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | Sophomore midfielder Jenna Biondo (North Babylon, N.Y.) assisted on the equalizing goal before firing home the game-winning penalty with 1:06 remaining Sunday afternoon for the Farmingdale State College women's soccer team, which rounded out play at its weekend invitational by capturing a 2-1 victory over Westfield State University.

With the decision, FSC head coach Chris Roche picked up his 250th career victory with the Rams. He began his tenure with the program in the 2005 campaign, and has guided Farmingdale State to 14 Skyline Conference titles and NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship appearances.

After a scoreless first half in which Farmingdale State (1-1) outshot the Owls (0-2-1) by a 7-2 margin, it was the visitors who opened the scoring less than two minutes into the second frame when Emersynn Cage tapped home her second goal of the weekend.

From there, FSC held the majority of possession for the remainder of the contest, and was able to level the match at 1-all in the 68th minute of action. Senior winger Kayla Mendez (Staten Island, N.Y.) centered the ball from the left side of the field to Biondo, who then found sophomore winger and fellow North Babylon native Katelyn Nunziato open inside the penalty area. From there, Nunziato perfectly placed an eight-yard shot into the lower-left corner of the goal to pull the hosts level.

In the closing minutes of the tilt, Nunziato was brought down just inside the top-left corner of the penalty area to earn Farmingdale State a spot kick. Biondo powered home her first goal in a Rams uniform to send her team to victory, and Roche to the 250-win milestone.

Freshman keeper Ollie Tobin (Lake Worth, Fla.) made one save to earn her first collegiate victory in the Farmingdale State net. 

The Rams are next in action Sept. 12-13, when they travel to the Hyatt Place Showcase, hosted by Roanoke College in Salem, Va. FSC will kick off the invitational Saturday at 2:30 p.m. versus Gettysburg College, before facing Greensboro College the next afternoon at 1:30.
