FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State baseball team hit five home runs in a doubleheader split versus Skyline Conference opponent SUNY Old Westbury on Saturday. The Rams earned a 9-3 victory in the first game, but fell 11-10 in 10-innings in game two.
FSC moved their record to 17-10Â overall and 10-4Â in conference play with six Skyline games remaining.
Game 1
The Rams trailed 1-0 early in the first game before senior third baseman
Tyler DiRocco (Commack, N.Y.) tied it in the second with his first home run of the season.
FSC took the lead in the third as sophomore second baseman
Ryan Wasserman (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) hit a one-out triple and scored two batters later on a triple by sophomore right fielder
Richie Heyder (Holbrook, N.Y.). Following a walk to senior center fielderÂ
Bobby Pollock (Manorville, N.Y.), DiRocco registered an RBI single to put Farmingdale State in front, 3-1.
The Rams broke the game open in the fifth, scoring six runs with two outs to take a 9-1 advantage. Senior first baseman
Jordan Lambert (Plainview, N.Y.) started the scoring with a towering 3-run home run over the right field foul pole to give FSC a five-run lead. After two walks and a single loaded the bases, Wasserman tallied a two-run single and junior shortstop
Chris McGuggart (Bethpage, N.Y.) recorded an RBI single to go up by eight.
Senior right-handed pitcher
Johnny Dougherty (Kings Park, N.Y. - 7.0 IP, 6 SO, 5 H, 3 R) finished off his fourth complete game of the season, improving to 7-1 on the season.
DiRocco led FSC offensively with three hits, a home run, stolen base, two runs and two RBI's, while senior designated hitter
Elian Pimentel (Huntington Station, N.Y.) was a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk. Wasserman registered two hits, a triple, two RBI's and a run scored, Heyder produced a triple, walk, two runs and an RBI and Lambert tallied a hit, home run and three runs batted in.
Game 2
Farmingdale State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one after Wasserman singled, stole second and scored on a double by Heyder.
Sophomore Mike Petrucelly put Old Westbury ahead in the fourth inning with a two-run homer over the left field wall. The Panthers extended their lead to 5-1 in the fifth with a 3-run home run by senior Rob Manetta.
In the bottom of the fifth. FSC cut their deficit to 5-4 with three runs crossing the plate. The Rams drew a pair of walks and scored in the next at-bat on a sacrifice bunt and throwing error. Heyder followed with a solo home run to close the gap to one.
Old Westbury regained a four-run advantage with three runs in the sixth, before Lambert hit his second home run of the day to make it an 8-6 game.
The Rams tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a Pollock two-run homer, but the Panthers regained the lead with two runs in the top of the eighth to go up, 10-8.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, a Pollock RBI single and DiRocco RBI double once again knotted the score.
In the top of the ninth, Old Westbury put runners on second and third with no one out. FSC sophomore pitcher
Derek Watts (Baldwin, N.Y.) struck out the next two batters and forced a fly out to keep the game tied at 10-10.
Old Westbury set the Rams down in order in the bottom of the ninth and used a Zach Horowitz solo home run in the 10th to take an 11-10 lead.
The Rams put one runner on in the bottom of the 10th but were unable to score as they fell, 11-10.
Heyder and Pollock tallied two hits, a home run and two RBI's apiece, while Wasserman registered two hits, two walks and two runs scored. DiRocco and McGuggart notched two hits and two runs each and Lambert had a home run and two runs batted in.
Farmingdale State is right back at it tomorrow, Sunday, April 28th as they play host Maritime for a Skyline doubleheader at noon.
