Baseball Downed by Cobleskill

SUNY Cobleskill 19, Farmingdale State 11
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | In the Farmingdale State College baseball team's final game before its spring break trip to Florida, the Rams fell to hot-hitting SUNY Cobleskill on Tuesday night, 19-11.

The Tigers (2-4) staked claim to a 5-1 lead after the top of the third inning, before the host Rams (0-2) countered with a four-run third to tie the contest. Sophomore right fielder Richie Heyder (Holbrook, N.Y.) ripped a two-run double to center to score senior Daniel Deutsch (Northport, N.Y.) and sophomore Ryan Wasserman (New Hyde Pk., N.Y.), before senior Tyler DiRocco's (Commack, N.Y.) sacrifice fly to right scored classmate Bobby Pollock (Manorville, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to 5-4. Heyder then advanced two bases on a wild pitch in the next at-bat, sliding across home plate to level the game at 5-all.

After Cobleskill put five runs on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, Farmingdale State plated four runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning to pull to within a 10-9 margin. Consecutive RBI ground outs by junior infielder Chris McGuggart (Bethpage, N.Y.) and Pollock brought home freshman catcher Sean Maldonado (Glen Head, N.Y.) and Wasserman, respectively, while junior Patrick Dallas (Patchogue, N.Y.) hit a single through the right side of the infield to score Deutsch with the Rams' eighth run of the night. Dallas proceeded to steal second base, and ran home when a single by senior Joseph Pasqua (Williston Pk., N.Y.) landed just inside the left-field line to bring the hosts to within one run.

The Tigers combined for nine runs across the final four innings to take control for good, with FSC notching single runs in the sixth inning on Pasqua's RBI ground out to score Pollock, and in the seventh frame when Deutsch scampered home on a wild pitch.

Deutsch scored three runs on the day from his leadoff spot in the lineup, reaching base on four walks while stealing two bases, while Dallas went 2-for-3 with a run and stolen base. Pasqua (triple, walk) and DiRocco each went 2-for-4 with two RBI from their Nos. 5 and 6 spots in the batting order, with Pollock and Wasserman scoring two times apiece.

Head coach Keith Osik's Farmingdale State side opens play at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Friday night (March 8), when they face off against Penn State-Abington in a 6:45 p.m. start in Auburndale, Fla.
