Baseball Spring Break Update: Rams Earn Pair of Wins

BASEBALL SCHEDULE/RESULTS
AUBURNDALE, FL | The FSC baseball team won two of their first three games at the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Florida to start their spring break trip.

Friday, March 8

FSC got its trip to the Sunshine State off to a red-hot start, picking up a 12-0, mercy-rule victory over Penn State-Abington.

The Rams got on the board in top of the first inning, when sophomore infielder Ryan Wasserman (New Hyde Pk., N.Y.) ran home on a double steal.

Three-run innings followed for Farmingdale State in the fifth and sixth innings to up their lead to 7-0. In the fifth, senior outfielder Bobby Pollock (Manorville, N.Y.) doubled home third baseman Tyler DiRocco (Sr.; Commack, N.Y.) and Justin Rindner (So.; East Meadow, N.Y.), before scoring on a single to right-center field by senior outfielder Joseph Pasqua (Williston Pk., N.Y.) to push the Rams' advantage to four runs.

Wasserman's bunt single with one-out in the sixth drove home senior first baseman Jordan Lambert (Plainview, N.Y.), with junior catcher Justin Porrino (Locust Valley, N.Y.) also coming across the dish on a throwing error. Wasserman later advanced to third on a wild pitch, before scoring on a throwing error on the same play to give FSC the 7-0 lead.

Pollock started the scoring in a five-run seventh frame when he came home on a wild pitch, with senior Daniel Deutsch (Northport, N.Y.) upping the lead to 9-0 when his double to left-center field brought home sophomore Richie Heyder (Holbrook, N.Y.). Lambert tripled to right-center to score Deutsch and push the lead to double digits, and later scored on a wild pitch. Porrino capped off the scoring when he was plated on a RBI ground out by sophomore Giovanni Cassino (Miller Place, N.Y.).

Pollock went 3-for-4 with two runs and as many RBI to lead a 12-hit Rams attack, while Deutsch and Lambert collected two hits apiece. Starting pitcher Johnny Dougherty (Sr.; Kings Park, N.Y.) fired four innings of six-strikeout ball while scattering two hits and three walks to earn his first win of the campaign.

Saturday, March 9

Farmingdale State earned a split against Widener University, scoring a 7-5 triumph in the opening contest before dropping the nightcap, 6-4.

The Rams scored five runs in the top of the first inning, including a grand slam to right-center field by Heyder and a RBI single up the middle by Deutsch to plate Pasqua. All nine batters for FSC recorded a hit in the inning.

After Widener pulled one run back in the bottom of the first, FSC scored runs in the second and fifth innings on a pair of RBI's by junior Chris McGuggart (Bethpage, N.Y.). He brought home Pollock in the second with an RBI grounder, before his two-out single to right scored DiRocco in the fifth frame.

The Pride placed the tying run on base in a four-run bottom of the seventh inning, but Rams senior right-handed pitcher Roman Dorosh (Holbrook, N.Y.) induced a fly out to left to pick up his first save of the season.

Wasserman (BB) and Porrino each went 2-for-4 at the dish, while McGuggart went 2-for-5 with a stolen base. Pollock (2 R) and Heyder both went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and DiRocco scored twice and added a stolen base. Sophomore pitcher Derek Watts (Baldwin, N.Y.) earned the victory on the bump with four innings of two-run ball in relief.

In the second contest, both teams scored three runs in the first inning, with Farmingdale State collecting its trio with two outs. Junior Justin DiMartino (Bethpage, N.Y.) started the rally with a RBI single to left-center to score Rindner, before stealing second base and scoring on a base-knock to left by freshman catcher Sean Maldonado (Glen Head, N.Y.). Following back-to-back singles by sophomore Joshua Andrechuk (Holbrook, N.Y.) and junior Patrick Dallas (Patchogue, N.Y.) to load the bases, senior Elian Pimentel (Huntington Station, N.Y.) laced a single to right to score Maldonado and knot the game at 3-all.

Widener plated three runs in the top of the fifth to go ahead 6-3, before FSC closed the gap with a single run in its half of the inning. DiMartino was issued a one-out walk, and moved up 90 feet on a passed ball. After moving to third base on a fielder's choice, Andrechuk drove the junior home with a single up the middle to bring the Rams to within a 6-4 count.

Farmingdale State had runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to capitalize as they fell.

Andrechuk was 3-for-3 at the dish, while DiMartino was 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and two stolen bases.

FSC will next take on Oneonta in a seven-inning doubleheader tomorrow, Monday, March 11th at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex at 3:00 p.m.
