FSC's Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short in Skyline Opener vs. USMMA

Merchant Marine - 12, Farmingdale State - 11
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | Trailing 11-8 heading into the fourth quarter, the Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team cut their deficit to just one on two separate occassions but were unable to register the tying goal as they fell by a score of 12-11 to Merchant Marine on Saturday.

After USMMA (4-2, 1-0 Skyline) opened the scoring just 1:16 in, the Rams (3-7, 0-1 Skyline) scored four consecutive goals, including two by sophomore attack Emily Sohm (Seaford, N.Y.), to jump ahead, 4-1.

FSC led 4-2 and used a woman-up score by senior midfielder Ashley Codispoti (Patchogue, N.Y.) to regain the three-goal advantage.

The Mariners closed the first quarter with a pair of goals in the final two minutes as they were down, 5-4, at the start of the second.

Farmingdale State opened the second quarter with a goal by junior midfielder Molly Espey (West Hempstead, N.Y.), off the pass from Codispoti, before Sohm notched her third of the game to go up, 7-4.

Over the final 7:13 of the half, Merchant Marine rattled off four goals to take an 8-7 lead into the break.

Espey tied the score at 8-8 early in the third, but USMMA answered with three straight goals as they took the 11-8 advantage into the final 15 minutes.

With 12:52 to play, freshman attack Carly Livingston (Farmingdale, N.Y.) tallied back-to-back goals to pull the Rams within one at 11-10.

FSC nearly tied the score after drawing a free-position shot, but Mariners goalkeeper Karianna Eagle made the stop on Codispoti to maintain the lead. USMMA quickly went down the other way and scored a free-position goal to take a 12-10 advantage with 7:39 remaining.

Farmingdale State pulled to within one, 12-11, with 3:02 left on the clock on another Livingston goal. After losing the draw control, a save by senior goalie Ronnie Reilly (Oceanside, N.Y.) allowed the Rams to gain possession with 1:57 to play.

FSC took their final shot with 1:12 showing, but another save by Eagle secured the 12-11 victory for Merchant Marine.

Sohm and Livingston finished with three goals and one assist each, while Espey filled the stat sheet with three goals, five ground balls, four caused turnovers and three draw control. Codispoti added two goals, one assist and two caused turnovers in defeat.

On defense, junior Sarah Fava (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and senior Dominique Baldino (Island Park, N.Y.) registered three and two CT's, respectively.

The women's lacrosse team will next play host to Skyline opponent Maritime on Wednesday, April 3rd at 4:00 p.m.
