Game 2: Farmingdale State 5, Manhattanville 0
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | Behind the strong starting pitching of senior
Johnny Dougherty (Kings Park, N.Y.) and sophomore
Derek Watts (Baldwin, N.Y.), the Farmingdale State College baseball team opened Skyline Conference play Friday afternoon with a pair of shutout victories over visiting Manhattanville College. The Rams (8-6, 2-0 Skyline) captured a 1-0 victory in game one against the Valiants (7-9, 2-2), before taking a 5-0 decision in the nightcap.
Game 1
In the seven-inning opening contest, Dougherty tossed a complete-game four-hitter with one walk and nine strikeouts, facing just four batters over the minimum in his 86-pitch outing. He retired the last eight Manhattanville hitters in order, pitching around a one-out double by the Valiants in the top of the fifth inning to move to 3-1 on the season.
FSC provided the only run of the game to support Dougherty in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore second baseman
Ryan Wasserman (New Hyde Pk., N.Y.) hit a one-out double down the left-field line, and came around to score two batters later when classmate
Richie Heyder (Holbrook, N.Y.) hit a single up the middle for the eventual game-winning RBI.
Wasserman, Heyder and senior
Daniel Molina (E. Meadow, N.Y.) each registered one hit for the Rams.
Game 2
Farmingdale State tallied a four-run fifth inning to secure a lead that it would not relinquish. Senior
Daniel Deutsch (Northport, N.Y.) opened the frame with a walk, and scored the go-ahead run one batter later when junior outfielder
Justin DiMartino (Bethpage, N.Y.) ripped a RBI double to left field. DiMartino doubled the Rams' lead two batters later when he crossed the dish on an infield single by sophomore
Greg Friedman (Wading River, N.Y.), before Friedman and senior
Tyler DiRocco (Commack, N.Y.) scored on a single up the middle by Wasserman to push the edge to 4-0.Â
FSC tacked on one more run in the eighth inning, as senior
Jordan Lambert (Plainview, N.Y.) -- who reached on a two-out double to right-center field -- scored when Heyder reached safely on a right-side error in the infield.
Watts fired seven innings of four-hit ball while fanning four Valiants, and has now pitched 20.2 consecutive scoreless innings across his last four outings. Senior
Christian Esperon (W. Islip, N.Y.) took over on the bump for the final two innings to preserve FSC's third-straight shutout, scattering one hit and one walk while striking out two along the way.
Head coach
Keith Osik's Farmingdale State team is back in action at home on Wednesday afternoon (April 3), when it plays host to John Jay College for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
