Watts Tosses Shutout as Baseball Splits Doubleheader with John Jay

Game 1: John Jay - 7, Farmingdale State - 6
Game 2: Farmingdale State - 1, John Jay - 0
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State baseball team hosted John Jay for a 7-inning doubleheader on Sunday afternoon and earned a split. After falling in the first game by a score of 7-6, FSC sophomore pitcher Derek Watts (Baldwin, N.Y.) (W, 7.0 IP, 8 SO, 3 H) tossed a complete game shutout in the second game to lead the Rams to a 1-0 victory.

In game one, the Rams opened the scoring in the second inning after sophomore right fielder Richie Heyder (Holbrook, N.Y.) led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior first baseman Jordan Lambert (Plainview, N.Y.), and scored on a single by senior designated hitter Elian Pimentel (Huntington Station, N.Y.).

FSC increased their lead in the third with three more runs to take a 4-0 advantage. After loading the bases on singles by Patrick Dallas (Patchogue, N.Y.), Tyler DiRocco (Commack, N.Y.) and Bobby Pollock (Manorville, N.Y.), Heyder walked to drive in a run and Lambert notched a two-run single.

The game remained 4-0 until the fifth inning when John Jay put up seven runs on six hits to jump in front.

Farmingdale State put runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth after a single by Pollock and a walk by Lambert, but a 6-4-3 double play allowed John Jay to end the threat and maintain the three-run advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Rams quickly loaded the bases with no one out. The next two batters were Wasserman and DiRocco and they each tallied an RBI ground out to cut the deficit to 7-6. With the tying run on third, John Jay's David Michalski forced a ground out to secure the save and the 7-6 win.

Pollock and Dallas finished with two hits and one run scored apiece, while Lambert had a single, sac bunt, walk and two runs batted in.

Senior Johnny Dougherty (Kings Park, N.Y.) did not receive a decision but threw four scoreless innings with five strikeouts and just one hit allowed.

In game two, Watts and John Jay's Axel Kappes III held offenses to just one hit through the first four innings of play as the game was scoreless heading to the fifth.

The Bloodhounds put one on in the top of the fifth on an infield single, but the runner was quickly erased on a caught stealing by Rams' freshman catcher Sean Maldonado (Glen Head, N.Y.). In the bottom half of the inning, FSC sophomore left fielder Greg Friedman (Wading River, N.Y.) drew a two-out walk and stole second base, but a ground out in the next at-bat ended the inning as the game remained 0-0.

John Jay led off the sixth inning with a base hit and moved the runner to third following a pair of ground outs. Watts struck out the next batter looking to end the threat.

The Rams tallied the lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth as DiRocco hit a one-out triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Pollock.

Watts closed out the complete game shutout with a 1-2-3 seventh inning, including his eighth punch out of the day, to give Farmingdale State the 1-0 victory.

Watts moved to 2-0 on the year with the win and lowered his season ERA to 2.38. He leads Farmingdale State with 22.2 innings pitched and 17 strikeouts.

Farmingdale State will next open Skyline Conference play as they host Manhattanville for a doubleheader on Friday, March 29th at 1:00 p.m.
