Farmingdale State - 2, Plattsburgh - 0
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | Senior
Johnny Dougherty (W, 2-1, 5.0 IP, 4 SO, 0 R) and sophomore
Derek Watts (Sv, 1, 4.0 IP, 3 SO, 0 R) led the FSC baseball team to a 2-0 shutout victory over Plattsburgh State on Sunday afternoon. The two controlled a Cardinals (5-3) offense that entered the game ranked 11th in the Nation for scoring (10.9 runs per game).
Plattsburgh threatened early as they loaded the bases in the first inning on a hit-by-pitch, fielder's choice and a walk. Dougherty forced the next batter to strikeout swinging to keep the game scoreless.
The Rams (5-5) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning after senior first baseman
Jordan Lambert (Plainview, N.Y.) singled and came in on a double steal attempt. FSC had two on with two outs later in the inning, but a runner's interference ended the threat.
The Cardinals tried to answer in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with only one out. The next batter flew out and Rams' left fielder
Richie Heyder (Holbrook, N.Y.) nabbed the runner trying to score from third with a perfect throw to the plate to end the inning.
Plattsburgh loaded the bases again in the eighth, but Watts picked up a strikeout as the game remained, 1-0.
In the bottom half of the inning, senior right fielder
Bobby Pollock (Manorville, N.Y.) led off with a single and quickly moved to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch. Two batters later, Lambert registered a sacrifice fly to put Farmingdale State on top, 2-0.
The Cardinals put two runners on in the ninth, but Watts closed the game out with a strikeout and a lineout to clinch the 2-0 victory.
Dougherty earned his second win of the season after tossing five shutout innings. Watts picked up the first save of his career after throwing four scoreless innings in relief.
Sophomore second baseman
Ryan Wasserman (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) tallied two hits in the win.
The Rams will next head into Skyline Conference play when they host Manhattanville for a doubleheader on Friday, March 29th at 1:00 p.m.
