Baseball Spring Break Update: FSC Picks Up Walk-Off Victory

BASEBALL SCHEDULE/RESULTS
AUBURNDALE, FL | The Farmingdale State baseball team played three more games at the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Florida on Monday and Tuesday. They have just one more game on their spring trip as they play Gwynedd Mercy tomorrow, Wednesday, March 13th at 5:30 p.m.

Monday, March 11

The Rams took on SUNY Oneonta on Monday and fell in a high-scoring affair, 20-10.

Farmingdale State was down, 7-1, just an inning and a half in but used a four-run second to cut the deficit to just two. After the first two batters were set down, senior first baseman Jordan Lambert (Plainview, N.Y.) and junior catcher Justin Porrino (Locust Valley, N.Y.) each singled. Sophomore shortstop Ryan Wasserman (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) followed with a double before senior third baseman Tyler DiRocco (Commack, N.Y.) notched a two-run single. The Rams fourth run of the inning came on an RBI single by sophomore right fielder Richie Heyder (Holbrook, N.Y.) to make it a 7-5 game.

The Red Dragons held a 9-6 lead and scored four runs in the fifth inning to extend the advantage to seven.

FSC answered with three runs in the sixth, including RBI's by senior designated hitter Daniel Deutsch (Northport, N.Y.) and sophomore second baseman John Tardino (Kings Park, N.Y.) to make it 13-9.

Oneonta held Farmingdale State to just one run in the final three innings as they earned the 20-10 victory.

Senior center fielder Bobby Pollock (Manorville, N.Y.), Lambert and Wasserman each had three hits for the Rams in the loss.

Sophomore pitcher Trevor Diamond (Miller Place, N.Y.) tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in relief with a pair of strikeouts.

Tuesday, March 12

In the first of two 9-inning contests on Tuesday, FSC picked up a come-from-behind, extra-innings victory over Cornell College, 7-6.

Cornell jumped in front with three first-inning runs, but the Rams responded with three of their own in the third to tie the score. Senior center fielder Daniel Molina (East Meadow, N.Y.) ripped a single to start the rally and a Wasserman double put runners on second and third with one out. DiRocco followed with an RBI ground out to bring home Molina before a Pollock single brought home Wasserman. Heyder then hit a two-out double to score Pollock and knot the score at 3-3.

The game headed into the ninth inning tied 4-4 and Cornell scored a pair of runs on two throwing errors by the Rams to go ahead, 6-4.

In the bottom of the ninth, Molina led off with a single, but the next two batters were quickly retired. Pollock recorded a two-out RBI single to cut it to 6-5 before both Heyder and senior Elian Pimentel (Huntington Station, N.Y.) followed with walks to load the bases. Lambert batted next and beat out an infield single to bring home Pollock and knot the game at 6-6.

The game headed into extras with Cornell being held scoreless in the top of the 10th.

Junior shortstop Patrick Dallas (Patchogue, N.Y.) led off the bottom of the inning with a single for FSC and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Molina. Wasserman followed with a single to score Dallas and give Farmingdale State the 7-6 walk-off victory.

Heyder finished with three hits, two doubles, one walk, one run batted in and a stolen base, while Pollock registered two hits, two RBI's and two runs scored. Wasserman, Molina, Lambert and Dallas had two hits apiece and freshman catcher Sean Maldonado (Glen Head, N.Y.) added a hit and one run scored.

On the mound, senior Christian Esperon (West Islip, N.Y.) earned the win after throwing three innings with no earned runs. Sophomore Derek Watts (Baldwin, N.Y.) did not receive a decision but tossed 5.2 innings and allowed just three baserunners.

In Farmingdale State's second game, the Milwaukee School of Engineering earned a 13-3 victory in eight innings.

The Rams were held to just three hits on the day. Pimentel recorded the lone extra base hit for FSC, an RBI double over the left fielders head.

Sophomore Michael Camardi (Syosset, N.Y.) highlighted the Farmingdale State pitching staff with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts.
