St. Joseph's-Long Island - 87, Farmingdale State - 69
PATCHOGUE, N.Y. | A late 13-point push in the fourth period Tuesday night saw host St. Joseph's University-Long Island hold off the Farmingdale State College women's basketball team, 87-69, in Skyline Conference play.
The visiting Rams (9-12, 7-9 Skyline) had three players score in double figures, including senior forward
Layla Mendoza (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.), who tallied 19 points and led all players on defense with four steals. Freshman post
Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.) chipped in with 17 points, while sophomore guard
Victoria Kantzian (Staten Island, N.Y.) tied season-highs with 16 points and four 3-point field goals made.
St. Joseph's (16-7, 13-5) scored 16 of the first 18 points of the game to jump ahead five minutes in, before a 7-2 spurt by FSC momentarily cut the deficit to single digits, at 18-9, when junior
Isabella Greenwald (W. Islip, N.Y.) knocked down a long-range effort. The first frame ended with a six-point spurt by the Rams, including five points from Mendoza, to bring the visitors to within a 21-15 margin.
A pair of free throws by senior
Emily Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) with 6:18 to go in the first half closed the Golden Eagles' lead to 26-24. However, an eight-point spread by the hosts buoyed St. Joseph's to a double-digit lead, 46-36, at halftime.
The Golden Eagles led by double digits for the majority of the third quarter, and found themselves ahead 66-54 with more than eight minutes remaining in the contest. From there, a trifecta by Greenwald and a conventional 3-point play by Wooden on consecutive FSC possessions sparked a 7-0 run that reduced its deficit to five points at 66-61, with 6:52 on the clock. The Rams could get no closer, and 13-straight points by St. Joseph's gave the hosts an 81-63 advantage with less than three minutes to play.
Greenwald filled the stat sheet with nine points, five assists, two steals and six boards -- tying junior
Gemma Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) for the team-high on the glass.Â
