Women's Basketball Set Back at USMMA in Skyline Competition

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 57, Farmingdale State 45
KINGS POINT, N.Y. | A cold shooting spell in the third period by the Farmingdale State College women's basketball team allowed the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy to capture a 57-45, Skyline Conference victory on Saturday afternoon.

FSC (5-4, 3-2 Skyline) held a 15-8 lead through one quarter of play, along with a 27-21 lead at halftime. The Rams led 27-17 over the Mariners (6-1, 5-0) with 4:26 to go, when senior forward Alexandria Walbroehl (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) canned a jump shot off a pass from sophomore Mia Simmons (Jamaica, N.Y.). Sophomore forward Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.) led all players at the break with 10 points, including a 2-of-4 effort from 3-point range, while Simmons scored all seven of her points on the afternoon in the opening 20 minutes.

USMMA limited the Rams to an 0-of-14 shooting display from the field in the third period, with the hosts taking 35-31 lead into the final 10 minutes of action. After a layup by Farmingdale State senior Gemma Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) pulled the visitors to within a 39-35 count at the 7:21 mark of the fourth quarter, the Mariners notched seven straight points as part of a 17-2 run to take control for good.

Wooden picked up her fourth double-double of the season with a team-high 21 points and 10 rebounds, with Walbroehl registering a career-best 15 boards to go along with six points. Senior guard Erin Conte (Melville, N.Y.) tied for the game-high with four steals on the defensive end of the floor, while backcourt mate and fellow senior Isabella Greenwald (West Islip, N.Y.) dished out three assists.

Farmingdale State returns home for Skyline play on Tuesday night (Dec. 10), when it plays host to Yeshiva University at 6.
