Women's Basketball Rolls Past Medgar Evers in Season Opener

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College women's basketball team opened their 2024-25 season on Saturday afternoon, defeating visiting Medgar Evers, 58-39.

FSC (1-0) came out quick with eight unanswered points on a 3-pointer by senior guard Isabella Greenwald (West Islip, N.Y.) and five points by sophomore forward Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.).

After the Cougars (0-1) got on the board with a jumper, back-to-back layups from freshman guard Emily Tsiforas (Manhasset Hills, N.Y.) and senior guard Gemma Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) put Farmingdale State ahead, 12-2.

Medgar Evers cut their deficit to 14-8, before the Rams tallied the final eight points of the first quarter to take a 22-8 advantage into the second.

The Cougars trailed 30-19 at the halftime break and scored the opening basket of the third to close the gap to nine.

FSC responded with 12 consecutive points, including four points apiece by sophomore guard Mia Simmons (Queens, N.Y.) and Pohalski, to take a commanding, 42-21 lead.

Farmingdale State led by as many as 23 in the fourth quarter as they went on for the 58-39 season-opening victory.

Wooden finished with a game-high 15 points, to go with seven rebounds and a block. Pohalski posted a double-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals, while Greenwald recorded 11 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals. Simmons chipped in with 10 points, four boards and five steals and senior forward Alexandria Walbroehl (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) added four points and seven rebounds in the victory.

The Rams tallied 28 steals as a team, the 11th highest mark in program history for a single game.

FSC will next hit the road when they take on non-conference opponent Baruch College on Monday, November 11th at 7:00 p.m.
