FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College women's basketball team fell in Skyline Conference play Saturday afternoon, 82-66, to visiting St. Joseph's University-Long Island.
The Rams (5-7, 3-4 Skyline) jumped out in front 8-7 on a 3-pointer by junior
Gemma Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) 4:29 into play, before the Golden Eagles (9-4, 6-2) scored the next 15 points of the contest as part of a 20-2 run to end the first period with a 27-10 lead over FSC.
St. Joseph's collected the first six points of the second quarter, before a conventional 3-point play by senior
Emily Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) with 8:07 showing on the clock momentarily stopped the visitors' run. FSC sliced its deficit to 45-27 when junior
Isabella Greenwald (W. Islip, N.Y.) buried a trifecta with under a minute to go, before a nine-point spurt by the Golden Eagles pushed their lead to 54-27 at halftime.
The second half started with seven-consecutive points from Farmingdale State, including a trey from senior
Layla Mendoza (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) and back-to-back layups from freshman forward
Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.), to cut its deficit to 54-34. St. Joseph's canned a 3-pointer out of a time out to halt the hosts' spurt, before the Rams later got to within 19 when Wooden knocked down a pair of free throws with 1:35 remaining in the third period to pull to within a 65-46 margin. Farmingdale State got as close as an 80-66 count late in the game, when sophomore guard
Julia Dessart (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored five-straight points in the final 1:16 of action.
Wooden led all players with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go with seven rebounds, while
Emily Pohalski chipped in with eight points, three assists and two steals.
Gemma Pohalski added seven points and a game-high-tying eight boards for the Rams, with freshman
Mia Simmons (Jamaica, N.Y.) checking in with six points and four caroms. Mendoza, Greenwald, Dessart and sophomore
Adrianna Romo-Leroux (Selden, N.Y.) all added five points apiece for the hosts.Â
