Strong Second Quarter Leads Mount Saint Mary Past FSC

NEWBURGH, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State women's basketball team fell on the road at Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday night, 89-61. The Knights outscored the Rams, 31-13, in the second quarter en route to the Skyline Conference victory.

FSC (5-8, 3-5 Skyline) led 6-2 in the opening minutes on three points apiece from guards Emily Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) and Isabella Greenwald (West Islip, N.Y.).

Mount Saint Mary (8-5, 7-1 Skyline) trailed by two, 18-16, and tied the score with a jumper at the first quarter buzzer.

The Knights opened the second with a 3-pointer and back-to-back layups to jump in front, 25-18. 

The Rams were down by 10, 34-24, with five minutes on the clock before a 3-pointer by junior guard Jenna Pignataro (Farmingville, N.Y.) cut the deficit to seven. 

In the final four minutes of the quarter, MSMC outscored Farmingdale State, 15-4, as they took a 49-31 lead into the halftime break.

The Knights came out quick in the third with six unanswered points to go up by 24.

FSC freshman forward Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.) registered a layup in the next possession, but Mount Saint Mary answered with three consecutive layups to take their largest lead of the game at 61-33.

The Rams trailed 70-42 at the start of the fourth, and despite scoring 19 points in the final 10 minutes, fell 89-61.

Junior guard Gemma Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) led FSC with 16 points, while Wooden finished with nine points and three rebounds. E. Pohalski produced eight points, four assists and a career-best 10 rebounds. Sophomore Adrianna Romo-Leroux (Selden, N.Y.) tallied seven points off the bench and Greenwald, Pignataro and Layla Mendoza (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) each had five points apiece in defeat.

FSC next travels to Manhattanville College for a Skyline game on Saturday, January 13th at 1:00 p.m.
