Women's Basketball Opens 2024 With Skyline Triumph at Old Westbury

Farmingdale State 55, Old Westbury 38
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College women's basketball team jumped out to a 19-2 lead after one period of play Wednesday night, and never looked back, as the Rams kicked off 2024 with a 55-38 win at SUNY Old Westbury in Skyline Conference play.

FSC (5-6, 3-3 Skyline) tallied the first 14 points of the game behind scoring from seven different players, and had a strong defensive effort to jump out to its commanding lead after the opening quarter of action. The Rams forced 17 first-quarter turnovers by the Panthers (2-9, 1-6), and limited the hosts to an 0-for-7 effort from the field during that span.

Farmingdale State remained in control and carried a 27-8 lead into halftime, with junior forward Alexandria Walbroehl (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) scoring six points in her opening half of play with the Rams.

FSC continued its strong play in the second half, pushing its lead to as many as 32 (55-23) when Walbroehl converted a layup off an offensive rebound with 5:15 remaining in the contest.

Freshman forward Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.) tied for the game-high with 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go with a team-best eight rebounds and three assists, with classmate Mia Simmons (Jamaica, N.Y.) and Walbroehl contributing 12 and 10 points, respectively. Junior Gemma Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) tied a season-high with six assists to go along with three steals for the Rams, who picked up 24 points on the night off of 36 Old Westbury turnovers.

Head coach Mark Dellecave's FSC squad returns home Saturday (Jan. 6) for Skyline Conference play, as it welcomes St. Joseph's University-Long Island for a noon start.
