Women's Basketball Wins Second Straight in Skyline Play at Purchase

Farmingdale State 77, Purchase 45
PURCHASE, N.Y. | Behind a season-high 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting from senior forward Layla Mendoza (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.), the Farmingdale State College women's basketball team picked up its second-straight win in Skyline Conference play with a 77-45 decision at Purchase College on Tuesday night.

The Rams (4-4, 2-2 Skyline) also received double-doubles on the night from freshmen Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.) and Mia Simmons (Jamaica, N.Y.) to help the visitors hold a 56-34 rebounding margin. Wooden collected 16 points and 13 boards against the Panthers (0-9, 0-7), while Simmons checked in with season-highs of 12 points (5-of-10 FG) and 10 caroms.

Wooden scored four points across two-straight trips down the floor to spark a 9-0 run midway through the first period, with buckets by juniors Erin Conte (Melville, N.Y.) and Gemma Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) giving the visitors a 17-6 lead after 10 minutes of play.

After Purchase cut the deficit to 24-15 with 6:27 left in the second quarter, Mendoza scored back-to-back layups in starting a 10-2 spurt to push Farmingdale State's edge to 34-17 with 3:27 remaining. The two sides traded baskets the rest of the way, with the Rams sporting a 38-24 lead at halftime.

FSC outscored Purchase by a 21-7 margin in the third period, including 19 of the first 21 points of the frame, and never looked back in securing the victory.

Conte swiped three steals on the defensive end of the floor to lead all players, while Pohalski just missed a double-double with her nine-point, nine-rebound showing. The Rams also benefited on the night from a season-best 13-of-15 (.867) effort at the free-throw line

Head coach Mark Dellecave's Rams continue on the road Thursday night (Dec. 14), when they travel to New Haven, Conn., for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off at Albertus Magnus College.
