Women's Basketball Falls Short at Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, CT | The Farmingdale State women's basketball team traveled to Albertus Magnus College for a non-conference matchup on Thursday evening and fell, 80-71. The Rams now stand at 4-5 overall, while the Falcons improved to 10-3.

FSC opened the contest with 10 of the first 12 points to take an eight-point advantage. Senior forward Layla Mendoza (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) had six points and freshmen forward Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.) tallied four points during the run.

Albertus Magnus quickly responded with an 11-2 run to take a 13-12 edge. 

The Rams were down 15-14 in the final minute of the quarter and used a Victoria Kantzian (Staten Island, N.Y.) 3-pointer and Wooden layup to go up 19-15 heading into the second.

Farmingdale State took a 26-20 advantage with 6:52 to play in the quarter after a 3-pointer by junior guard Isabella Greenwald (West Islip, N.Y.).

The Rams were outscored 14-7 to close the half as the Falcons took a 34-33 lead into the break.

Over the first six minutes of the third quarter, Albertus Magnus held FSC to just four points, while scoring 18, to take a 15-point advantage at 52-37.

FSC closed the third quarter with eight unanswered points as they cut their deficit to seven at 56-49.

The Falcons extended their lead to 11, 72-61, with 4:39 to play, but a quick 6-0 run by the Rams closed the gap to just five with two minutes remaining.

Albertus Magnus answered with back-to-back layups to regain a nine-point edge.

The Rams were held to just four points in the final two minutes as the Falcons went on for the 80-71 victory.

Wooden led the way for FSC with 21 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, while Mendoza registered 20 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Gemma Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) had 12 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals and Greenwald produced eight points, eight rebounds, six assists and a block. Kantzian added eight points and five rebounds off the bench.

Albertus Magnus had three score 20+ points in the win.

Farmingdale State will next travel to play Division I Hofstra University on Saturday, December 16th at 5:00 p.m. This marks the first time FSC has played a DI opponent since 2017, when they traveled to Stony Brook University.
