NEW YORK | The Farmingdale State College women's basketball team suffered a 69-51 setback at the hands of Widener University Saturday, in the second and final day of the Hunter College Tip-Off Tournament.
The Rams (2-2) were within four points of the Pride (5-0) over the first seven minutes of play, before they pulled to within a 10-9 margin with 3:07 left in the first period on senior
Layla Mendoza's (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) layup on the fast break. Widener countered by scoring the next nine points of the game, and held a 20-11 advantage after the opening 10 minutes.
Widener tallied the first eight points of the second quarter, before junior
Jenna Pignataro (Farmingville, N.Y.) scored a driving layup halfway through to cut the FSC deficit to 28-13. After the teams exchanged buckets on their next possessions, the Pride ripped off five points in a row en route to holding a 38-17 halftime lead.
The Pride increased their lead to as many as 26 points in the third period, before the Rams received five straight points from freshman
Mia Simmons (Jamaica, N.Y.) as part of an 8-2 run to close the quarter within a 53-33 count. Farmingdale State then outscored Widener 18-16 in the final 10-minute session, with junior
Gemma Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.) knocking down a pair of 3-pointers along the way.
Mendoza's 11 points on the day led FSC, with Pohalski and junior guard
Erin Conte (Melville, N.Y.) registering 10 points apiece. Freshman
Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.) finished one point shy of a double-double, as she filled the stat sheet with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Head coach
Mark Dellecave's Rams kick off Skyline Conference play on the road Tuesday night (Nov. 21), when they travel back to Manhattan for a 6 p.m. tip-off against Yeshiva University. The contest will be played at Baruch College's ARC Arena.
