RIVERDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College women's basketball team dropped its Skyline Conference opener Wednesday night, falling to host College of Mount Saint Vincent by a 71-51 final at the Peter Jay Sharp Center.
The visiting Rams (2-3, 0-1 Skyline) jumped out to a 12-4 lead five minutes into play, including four-straight points midway through the stretch by junior guard
Gemma Pohalski (Huntington, N.Y.). The Dolphins (5-1, 2-0) responded with seven consecutive points, before a steal and layup by junior guard
Erin Conte (Melville, N.Y.) helped FSC to a 14-13 lead after the first period.
Farmingdale State netted the first six points of the second quarter behind three apiece from senior
Layla Mendoza (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) and sophomore
Victoria Kantzian (Staten Island, N.Y.) to push the visitors' edge to 20-13, before CMSV went on an 8-1 stretch to knot the score at 21 midway through. FSC junior guard
Isabella Greenwald (W. Islip, N.Y.) buried a trifecta with 3:08 on the clock, before the Dolphins registered 10 straight points to hold a 31-24 lead at the half.
Mount Saint Vincent collected the first four points of the third period, before back-to-back buckets by Pohalski (14 pts., 6-of-9 shooting, 6 reb.) brought her side to within a 37-28 margin with 6:30 left. After Kantzian's trey just over a minute later cut FSC's deficit back to single digits, the Dolphins scored 10 of the next 13 points to go in front 50-34. Greenwald's free throw, followed by a pair of baskets in the paint by Pohalski, closed out the quarter to cut the CMSV lead to 11.
Mendoza's pair at the charity stripe 77 seconds into the final quarter sliced the hosts' lead into single digits once more. The Rams could get no closer, as Mount Saint Vincent used a 13-2 run to go ahead by as many as 21 before closing out the contest.
Mendoza scored 15 points for the Rams, while freshman forward
Taneece Wooden (Freeport, N.Y.) and Kantzian (two steals) checking in with eight and seven points, respectively. Greenwald tied for the game-high with seven rebounds to lead FSC's efforts on the glass.
