Rams Hold Cardinals to Three Runs in Doubleheader Sweep

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team met non-conference opponent Plattsburgh State this afternoon and picked up two victories to improve to 4-1 overall. 

In game one, the Rams scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning to quickly take a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, junior right fielder Michael Marino (Franklin Square, N.Y.) led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by freshman second baseman Andrew Karkota (Manorville, N.Y.). Freshman left fielder Richard Sullivan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) later put the Rams ahead 4-0 with an RBI single to right.

After the Cardinals cut the deficit to 4-3, Farmingdale State scored eight runs in the sixth inning to lead 12-3 and put the game out of reach.

Junior shortstop Anthony Alvino (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) was 1-for-3 at the plate with 3 RBI and two runs scored, while senior center fielder Edward Bergmann (East Meadow, N.Y.) had two hits a run scored and an RBI for the Rams.

Plattsburgh State (0-4) was led by junior left fielder Nicholas Lupo (Fishkill, N.Y.) who was 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Senior pitcher Michael Dolce (St. James, N.Y.) earned his first win of the season after allowing one earned run in five innings of work.

In the second game, freshman Matt Seelinger (Levittown, N.Y.) threw five no-hit innings with four strikeouts and two walks in his first career win for Farmingdale State.

After allowing no hits through five, the Rams scored two in the bottom of the fifth. Junior second baseman Mike Scarlato (Holbrook, N.Y.) led off with a single up the middle before stealing second. Scarlato was safe at third on Bergmann's fielders choce to put runners on the corners. With two outs, junior third baseman Tom Rydzewski (Franklin Square, N.Y.) tripled to right center to clear the bases for the eventual game-winning runs and the 2-0 win.

Junior reliever Alex Pangourelias (Briarwood, N.Y.) picked up the save in two innings of work, allowing two hits with one strikeout and no walks.

Farmingdale State next will travel to William Paterson for a non-conference game on Tuesday, March 11th at 3:00 p.m.
