PURCHASE, N.Y. | A late goal inside the final five minutes of play Saturday afternoon sent the Farmingdale State College men's soccer team to a 1-0 defeat in its Skyline Conference opener at the hands of host Manhattanville University.
The Valiants (4-0-3, 1-0 Skyline), who held a 29-9 shots advantage over the Rams (2-5-1, 0-1) on the afternoon, received the breakthrough goal with 4:52 remaining, when a right-sided cross by Alec Pineda was headed in from close range by a streaking Tiernan McLaughlin for the only score of the afternoon.
Within a minute of Manhattanville's strike, FSC had two excellent opportunities to level the match. First, junior fullback
William Guillen (Locust Valley, N.Y.) collected a loose ball in the middle in the penalty area and sent a shot towards the left side of the goal that was headed off the post by a Valiants defender. Seconds later, freshman striker
Javier Newman (Amityville, N.Y.) was stopped by the Manhattanville keeper from 15 yards away.

Vas Dallas (Garden City South, N.Y.) made five saves in goal for Farmingdale State, which is back on the road in Skyline action Tuesday night at Maritime for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
