Javier Newman (Amityville, N.Y.) made program history in his collegiate debut on Wednesday night, scoring three goals and adding an assist for a seven-point performance as the Farmingdale State College men's soccer team defeated Baruch College, 5-3.
Newman became the first student-athlete in program history to record a hat trick in his collegiate debut, while his seven points are tied for the third-most in a single game in program history. He entered the match in the 24th minute and scored just 6:27 later to give FSC a 2-1 lead.
The Rams (2-4-1) fell behind early after Baruch (0-5) scored in the eighth minute, but junior midfielder
Christian Russo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) tied the match in the 31st minute. Newman collected a loose ball and sent a cross to Russo, who finished into the open net.
Just 60 seconds later, Russo played a leading pass to Newman, who spun around the goalkeeper and finished through a defenders' legs to put Farmingdale State ahead, 2-1, heading into halftime.
Newman tallied his second goal of the match early in the second half, scoring on a 20-yard shot that deflected off of the goalkeeper and into the right side of the net. He completed his hat trick 13 minutes later when he finished a cross from Russo to put Farmingdale State in front, 4-1.
Sophomore forward Lucca Noboa (Freeport, N.Y.) added FSC's fifth goal at 63:23, stealing the ball from a Baruch defender before scoring from 12 yards out.
The Bearcats scored twice in the final 25 minutes, but the Rams held on for the 5-3 victory.
Russo finished with a career-best five points on one goal and three assists, while Newman registered six shots and three shots on goal.
In goal, sophomore Vas Dallas (Garden City South, N.Y.) made a career-high 12 saves for the Rams.
Farmingdale State will next open Skyline Conference play on Saturday, September 19th, when they travel to Manhattanville for a noon kick off.
