FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Western Connecticut State on Wednesday afternoon. The Wolves took the opener by a score of 13-5 before the Rams responded with a 5-2 victory in game two. Farmingdale State now stands at 8-10 on the season, while WestConn moved to 5-13 overall,.
In game one, Western Connecticut jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning and continued to add on their way to a 13-5 win.
Junior third baseman Bailey Hammock (Port Jervis, N.Y.) led the Rams offensively, going 3-for-4 with a triple, RBI, and run scored. Sophomore left fielder Alexandra Pole (Rocky Point, N.Y.) finished 2-for-4 with a double, while sophomore center fielder Nikole Galgano (Levittown, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three stolen bases. Junior Isabella Marchini (Hicksville, N.Y.) and freshman Mia DeLango (Red Hook, N.Y.) each doubled, and junior Michelle Segura (Shirley, N.Y.) added an RBI single in the loss.
In game two, the Rams broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs. Senior designated player Samantha Stolfi (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) started the rally with a single before Marchini followed with a base hit. Galgano then delivered a two-out RBI single, and sophomore shortstop Natalie McMichael (Smithtown, N.Y.) drove in two runs on a triple to give FSC the 3-0 lead.
The Rams added two insurance runs in the sixth inning as junior center fielder Ashley Toro (Bay Shore, N.Y.) came around to score on an RBI single by Galgano and senior second baseman Lauren Varagnolo (Centereach, N.Y.) followed with an RBI bunt single to extend the lead to 5-0.
Western Connecticut scored two unearned runs in the seventh, but Farmingdale State held on for the 5-2 victory.
Marchini finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Galgano was 2-for-3 with two RBI's, two runs scored, and three stolen bases. McMichael added two hits, a walk and two RBI's and Toro scored twice and stole two bases in the victory.
Freshman pitcher Kiara Kegel (Massapequa, N.Y.) earned the complete-game win, allowing just seven hits and two unearned runs.
Farmingdale State will next travel to St. Joseph's-Long Island on Saturday, April 11th for a Skyline Conference doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
