Softball Notches Pair of Shutouts Versus Hunter

Game 1: Farmingdale State 8, Hunter 0 (5 inn.)
Game 2: Farmingdale State 6, Hunter 0
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | Junior Madison Sturtz (East Islip, N.Y.) had two hits in each of the Farmingdale State College softball team's games Wednesday against visiting Hunter College, with the host Rams earning a pair of shutout victories in non-conference play. FSC (21-15) used a seven-run fifth inning in the opening game to defeat the Hawks (12-26) by an 8-0 score via the mercy rule, before a complete-game one-hitter in the pitcher's circle by freshman Kiara Kegel (Massapequa, N.Y.) propelled the Rams to a 6-0 victory in the nightcap.

Farmingdale State junior Madison DeMaio (Elmont, N.Y.) tossed a complete-game two-hitter with six strikeouts in the first contest, and received all the run support she would need in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore Alexandra Pole (Rocky Point, N.Y.) sprinted home from third base after another runner was caught in a rundown.

The Rams left runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings, before sending 11 hitters to the plate to post a seven-run fifth inning to end the game. Junior outfielder Isabella Marchini (Hicksville, N.Y.) provided a two-run, two-hop double to the left field fence to score senior Lauren Varagnolo (Centereach, N.Y.) and freshman Emily Lopez (East Meadow, N.Y.), while a two-run single up the middle by senior Samantha Stolfi (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) plated junior Ashley Toro (Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Stefanie Cogswell (Saugerties, N.Y.) was the game-ending play. Both baserunners earlier reached on bases-loaded walks, while Lopez and sophomore Hailey Cannon (Forest Hills, N.Y.) both provided run-scoring singles in the rally.

Sturtz and Stolfi both went 2-for-4 in the game, while sophomore shortstop Natalie McMichael (Smithtown, N.Y.) reached base safely twice (H, BB) to go along with a stolen base and one run scored.

Kegel allowed a walk and right-side single to start the second game, before Pole, Lopez and Sturtz combined on a 5-3-2 double play to end the threat.

Sturtz (2-for-3) then opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, when she came home from third base on a high pickoff throw from the Hawks' catcher.

The Rams tacked on three more runs in the second inning, with Marchini coming home on a throwing error following a single by sophomore Nikole Galgano (Levittown, N.Y.), before Pole scored one batter later on a wild pitch to make the score 3-0 in favor of the home side. Sturtz provided a two-out RBI three batters later, when her single up the middle plated Toro (2-for-3, 2 R, SB) with FSC's fourth run of the game.

Toro and Galgano (3-for-3) both came home on a squeeze bunt from Varagnolo in the sixth inning, with Toro crossing the dish after the throw to first base sailed down the right-field line.

Kegel (6-6 record) threw 47 of her 77 pitches for strikes, and scattered three walks while fanning four Hawks to earn her second shutout of the season.

Farmingdale State is back home Friday at 3 p.m., when it plays host to a Skyline Conference doubleheader against Purchase College.
