FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State softball team swept Purchase College in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Friday evening, winning both games by run-rule. With the victories, the Rams improved to 23-15 overall and 13-3 in conference play with one more Skyline doubleheader remaining in the regular season.
In game one, FSC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on an RBI single from junior third baseman
Bailey Hammock (Port Jervis, N.Y.) and a pair of RBI sacrifice bunts by senior designated player
Samantha Stolfi (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and junior left fielder
Alexandra Pole (Rocky Point, N.Y.).
FSC extended their lead in the second when Hammock recorded a two-out, two-run single to bring home senior second baseman
Lauren Varagnolo (Centereach, N.Y.) and sophomore shortstop
Natalie McMichael (Smithtown, N.Y.) to go up, 5-0.
After loading the bases in the third, McMichael produced an RBI single and junior catcher
Madison Sturtz (East Islip, N.Y.) followed with a two-run single to put Farmingdale State ahead by eight.
The Rams added a run in the fourth as they went on for the 9-0 run-rule victory.Â
Freshman first baseman
Emily Lopez (Miller Place, N.Y.) tallied a game-high three hits and two runs scored for FSC. Sturtz finished 2-for-2 with two RBI's and one run scored, while Hammock had two hits, three runs batted in and one run scored.
Junior pitcher
Madison DeMaio (Elmont, N.Y.) earned the win on the mound, tossing four shutout innings and striking out three.
In game two, Farmingdale State recorded five runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead. McMichael and Varagnolo each registered RBI singles before Sturtz produced a two-run base hit. The fifth run came in on a failed pick-off by Purchase as the Rams took the 5-0 lead.
FSC added three runs in the third on a Purchase throwing error, a stolen base and a wild pitch as they took an 8-0 advantage.
Freshman
Kiara Kegel (Massapequa, N.Y.) did not allow a run over the final two innings as she picked up her seventh win of the season.
McMichael tallied a hit, an RBI and two runs scored in game two, while Sturtz finished with a hit and two runs batted in.Â
The Rams are right back at it tomorrow, Saturday, May 2nd when they play host to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn for a Skyline Conference doubleheader at noon on Senior Day. Senior Day ceremonies will begin at 11:45 a.m. so be sure to arrive early.
