Game 1: Farmingdale State 3, Old Westbury 0 (9 inn.)
Game 2: Old Westbury 8, Farmingdale State 0 (5 inn.)
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College softball team split a Skyline Conference doubleheader Monday night at SUNY Old Westbury, winning the first game in nine innings, 3-0, before dropping an 8-0 decision in five innings in the second tilt.
The first game featured a pitcher's duel between FSC junior
Madison DeMaio (Elmont, N.Y.) and the Panthers' Olivia DeRose, and went to extra innings after neither side could get on the board through seven innings of action. The best scoring chance prior to extra innings came in the top of the fifth, when the Rams were unable to cash in on having two runners in scoring position.Â
After both teams were retired in order in the eighth inning, Farmingdale State mounted a two-out rally to score the only three runs of the game. Following
Samantha Stolfi's (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) two-out single, three consecutive doubles drove in as many runs to lift the FSC offense. Freshman
Emily Lopez (East Meadow, N.Y.) delivered the game-winning run when she plated pinch runner
Lauren Varagnolo (Jr.; Centereach, N.Y.), before the rookie came around to score on a left-field shot by junior
Isabella Marchini (Hicksville, N.Y.) to double the visitors' edge. Marchini then scored the Rams' third run when sophomore
Alexandra Pole (Rocky Point, N.Y.) laced a run-scoring double down the left-field line.
DeMaio earned the shutout after scattering six hits and two walks while striking out eight Panthers, with Marchini and Lopez both finished with two hits at the plate.
Old Westbury (19-10, 9-5 Skyline) put up three runs in the bottom of the first inning of the nightcap, and never looked back against FSC (19-15, 11-3).Â
The Rams had two runners in scoring position with two outs in the top of the third inning following a leadoff walk by DeMaio and a single to center field, but were unable to capitalize.
The Panthers added five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull away for good, and allowed just a two-out walk to Sturtz in the top of the fifth inning before closing out the mercy rule-shortened game.
Farmingdale State closes out its regular season with three home doubleheaders, beginning with Wednesday's 3:30 p.m. non-conference set against Hunter College.
