Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader With NYU

Game 1: NYU 7, Farmingdale State 2
Game 2: Farmingdale State 5, NYU 1
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting New York University on Wednesday, dropping a 7-2 decision to the Violets in the opening contest before winning the second game by a 5-1 count.

In the opener, the Violets scored single runs across each of the first three innings, before the Rams responded with two runs in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Natalie McMichael (Smithtown, N.Y.) led off the frame by reaching on an infield throwing error, before scoring two batters later when the NYU throw to retire junior Madison Sturtz (East Islip, N.Y.) on a sacrifice bunt attempt rolled down the right-field line. FSC's second run came in the next at-bat, as junior Bailey Hammock (Port Jervis, N.Y.) reached on a bunt single to plate senior Lauren Varagnolo (Centereach, N.Y.).

NYU answered by putting up two runs in the top of the fourth inning, before adding another pair in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Junior center fielder Ashley Toro (Islip, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 in the opening tilt, while six other Farmingdale State hitters reached on a base hit.

In the nightcap, FSC (18-12) backed starting pitcher Madison DeMaio (Elmont, N.Y.) with one run in the first inning against NYU (7-27), before adding two runs apiece in the second and fourth frames. The hosts' initial run came when senior designated player Samantha Stolfi (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) socked a single down the left-field line to plate Sturtz, before the senior increased the Rams' lead to 3-0 in the second inning when her single up the middle plated Sturtz (3-for-4, 3 R) and Varagnolo (2 R, 2 BB).

Farmingdale State's advantage swelled to 5-0 with a two-run fourth inning, when Hammock's squeeze bunt chased Varagnolo across the plate, before Sturtz tacked on the Rams' fifth run of the game on a right-side RBI ground out by junior Isabella Marchini.

The Violets added a two-out run in the top of the seventh inning, before the FSC defense ended the contest when the visitors' batter tried to extend the RBI double and was thrown out at third base.

DeMaio moved to 12-6 in the pitcher's circle on the season after allowing five hits and two walks, while striking out three NYU batters across her 87-pitch complete game.

Farmingdale State has a pair of road Skyline Conference doubleheaders this weekend, beginning Saturday at 1 p.m. at Old Westbury, as well as a noontime set on Sunday at Manhattanville.
