Softball Captures Pair of Skyline Shutout Wins Versus Mount Saint Mary

Game 1: Farmingdale State 2, Mount Saint Mary 0
Game 2: Farmingdale State 1, Mount Saint Mary 0
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State College softball team earned a pair of shutout victories in Skyline Conference play Saturday afternoon, defeating visiting Mount Saint Mary College by a 2-0 score in the opener, before capturing a 1-0 decision in game two.

In game one, the Rams (15-11, 8-0 Skyline) scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning to back junior starting pitcher Madison DeMaio (Elmont, N.Y.). Sophomore shortstop Natalie McMichael (Smithtown, N.Y.) reached on a one-out single to right-center field, before moving up 60 feet when DeMaio was issued a walk. Following a successful sacrifice bunt by junior Madison Sturtz (East Islip, N.Y.), classmate Bailey Hammock (Port Jervis, N.Y.) drove McMichael home on an infield base hit to put the hosts ahead of the Knights (9-15, 5-3), 1-0.

DeMaio was perfect through her first 11 batters faced, and received one more run of support in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sturtz led off the frame with a triple to right-center field for her 100th career hit in a Farmingdale State uniform, and after FSC loaded the bases, came across the plate on a right-side RBI ground out from junior Isabella Marchini (Hicksville, N.Y.).

Sturtz, Hammock, McMichael and junior center fielder Ashley Toro (Islip, N.Y.) each had a base hit, while senior designated player Samantha Stolfi (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) worked one walk and tallied her seventh double of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning. DeMaio faced just three batters over the minimum, scattering four hits while striking out eight Mount Saint Mary hitters to earn her second shutout of the season.

In the nightcap, DeMaio reached on an infield error to lead off the bottom of the third inning, and moved to second on a passed ball. Freshman Charley Callahan (Wallkill, N.Y.) pinch ran for DeMaio, and moved to third base on a sacrifice by Sturtz before sliding home one batter later on Hammock's successful squeeze bunt up the first-base line for the only run of the contest.

DeMaio once again breezed through the first 11 MSMC hitters, and pitched out of situations with runners in scoring position in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to capture her third shutout of the season – and second of the afternoon. The right-hander moved her record to 11-5 on the season by scattering four hits and one walk, while fanning three Knights – including a looking strike out to end the game with runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Hammock and sophomore Nikole Galgano (Levittown, N.Y.) both registered one hit and one stolen base, while Marchini went 1-for-3 at the dish.

Farmingdale State returns to Skyline play Sunday night, when they play a doubleheader against Yeshiva University at 6 p.m. from Flowers Park in New Rochelle, N.Y.
