Western Connecticut - 15, Farmingdale State - 9
DAVENPORT, FL | The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team was defeated by Western Connecticut State University, 15-9, on Tuesday afternoon at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Florida during its spring break trip.
The Rams (5-1) jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first two goals of the contest. Senior midfielder Casey Fortunato (Northport, N.Y.) opened the scoring off a feed from classmate Tommy Mai (Islip, N.Y.), before senior midfielder Connor Murtha (Moriches, N.Y.) found the back of the net just 26 seconds later, also assisted by Mai, to give Farmingdale a 2-0 advantage.
The Wolves (5-3) responded with four straight goals to close out the first quarter and extended their advantage in the second, taking a 7-4 lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, Western Connecticut used back-to-back goals in the opening seconds to build a 9-4 advantage. The Rams registered goals from senior midfielder Amir Slaughter (North Babylon, N.Y.), sophomore midfielder Nicholas Mistler (Patchogue, N.Y.), and junior attack Adam Giovinco (Syosset, N.Y.) in the third quarter but trailed 12-7 heading into the fourth.
Giovinco and freshman attack Ethan Vargas (Bay Shore, N.Y.) added man-up goals in the fourth, but FSC fell 15-9.
Giovinco led the Rams offensively with three goals, while Mistler and Fortunato had a goal and two assists each. Mai dished out a team-high three assists in the loss.
Junior goalkeeper Connor Dobson (Islip, N.Y.) made a career-high 15 saves in net. Junior long-stick midfielder Sean Lawson (Mattituck, N.Y.) contributed four caused turnovers and three ground balls for Farmingdale State.
Western Connecticut was led by Tristan McMahon, who finished with six goals, while James Krieg added five goals and one assist.
The Rams will next travel to face Oswego State on Saturday, March 21st at 1:00 p.m.
