Men's & Women's Tennis Teams Split with Pratt in Non-Conference Play

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State men's and women's tennis teams played host to non-conference opponent Pratt Institute on Saturday. The men captured a 7-0 shutout victory, while the women fell, 7-0.

The FSC men (1-1) picked up the doubles point as the No. 1 pairing of freshman Devan Melandro (Syosset, N.Y.) and sophomore Zakaria Ahmed (Manhasset, N.Y.) tallied a 6-2 win over the Cannoneers' Mikah Liu and Eagle Zhang. The Rams second pair of junior Emil Sabovic (Bohemia, N.Y.) and Luke Plana (Bohemia, N.Y.) recorded a 6-3 win, while junior Kwaku Agyeman (Middletown, N.Y.) and sophomore Jordan Gonzales (Central Islip, N.Y.) took third doubles in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-3).

The men rolled through singles play, dropping just one set. Melandro produced a 6-3, 6-0 victory in the top-flight match, before Agyeman tallied a 6-3, 6-2 win in the third position. Sophomore Michael Lerman (Massapequa, N.Y. - 6-3, 6-0), Gonzales (6-3, 6-1) and Sabovic (6-2, 6-0) cruised through fourth through sixth singles and Ahmed (3-6, 6-0, 6-0) earned a come-from-behind win at second singles to clinch the 7-0 shutout.

On the women's side (1-3), Pratt was victorious in both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles as they took the 1-0 lead into singles competition. FSC seniors MacKenzie Gisler (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and Mikayla DeMaria (West Babylon, N.Y.) earned a 6-4 win in the third doubles match.

Pratt quickly jumped ahead 3-0 after earning a 6-0, 6-1 victory at second singles and a 6-1, 6-2 win in the third slot. The Cannoneers' Pallavi Verghese clinched the match with a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) tie-break victory in the top-flight match over Rams' junior Natalia Furchel (Manorville, N.Y.) before picking up wins in the fourth through sixth singles matches for the non-conference win.

This marked the final match for the men during their fall schedule. The Farmingdale State women will next travel to Western Connecticut State for a non-conference match on Wednesday, September 17th at 3:30 p.m.
